Carlsbad - William Owen Butler, 55, passed away August 22, 2019 in San Diego, CA following a brief illness.
Bill is remembered for his intelligence, wit, charm and drive-- traits that brought him to the top of his class at Bangor High School and then to Colby College, where he earned a liberal arts degree in 1986. He then earned an M.S. degree in Biochemistry from the University of Maine, which led him to a career in biotechnology and brought him to the San Diego, CA area.
Bill was a pharmaceutical professional with 30 years of industry experience and a track record of being a proven leader, having successfully led complex, global pharmaceutical development teams and programs. He was integrally involved in the development of several pharmaceutical products that are currently registered for the treatment of diabetes, infectious disease, and organ transplantation.
The last 15 years of his life were his happiest as he met, married, and built a wonderful family life with his perfect match, Jennifer (Vale) Butler. They welcomed daughter Brooke in 2007, who quickly became an adored sibling to Bill's son Brandon, 21. He loved supporting and guiding their lives as people, students and athletes. Bill was a fun-loving and adored husband and father and world-class breakfast chef and grill master whose pride in his children and love for his wife and family were clear, present and memorable.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, Owen and Joyce Butler, by his older brother Steven Butler, and his father-in-law John Vale. In addition to his wife and children, he is remembered by his brothers Doug and Paul and their families in Maine, including several nieces and nephews who adored Uncle Bill's humor and were inspired by his successes. He is also remembered by his mother-in-law Carole Vale of Carlsbad, CA and brother and sister-in-law Alan and Heidi Vale and their children of Palo Alto, CA.
A Celebration of Life is being planned.

Very sorry to hear of Bill's passing. I met him at Amylin Pharmaceuticals as a colleague on several drug development teams, and he was a pleasant, collaborative and kind man. He seemed to have a special talent for placing the humorous remark in just the right place and time, for making situations that might have been aggravating entertaining instead, for closing always with a smile. Here's one back atcha, Bill!

I had the great pleasure and experience of being Bill's roommate at one time along with my brother Chris and good friend Garth Cormier. I cannot think of Bill without smiling and remembering what an incredible person he was and so much fun to be around. Nothing but great memories of him. My sincere condolences to Paul and his entire family. My prayers and thoughts to all.

Such a loss in so many ways. I imagine he had much more to accomplish. So smart and fun! Our high school gang had many crazy times. I haven’t seen him since he made a grand entrance doing a cartwheel at our high school reunion- we were all waiting for him to join us to take the class picture. Lol! Thought of him often over the years.

I spent a good chunk of my fifth grade summer planted in the Butler family couch watching Red Sox games then going down the street to imitate Yaz and Fisk and Dewey Evans. Bil was chill. The chillest dude ever. Totally get the Cali move. He felt the call. So glad he found his soulmate and experienced the joys of raising both a son and a daughter. My love to them all and especially to Paul who is heroic beyond words - a leader and a lover of Maine and it’s future.

My condolences to Bill's family and friends. Bill was a colleague of mine at Amylin. While I worked at the Ohio site and Bill in California, we worked collaboratively for more than a decade. Bill had a way of keeping people smiling - always! He was such a pleasure to be around, and he was a tremendously helpful resource. My condolences to his family and all who were close to him.

Thoughts and prayers to the entire Butler Family. I have fond memories of growing up in the same neighborhood as Bill. I enjoyed playing Bangor Rec Softball with Bill during our summer vacations. We also played Little League, were on the same Senior League team and we played baseball at 5th Street Jr High together. He had a great sense of humor and he was fun to be around. Does not surprise me that he accomplished so much. RIP Bill.
