Dover-Foxcroft - Violet Lyford passed away February 12, 2020, at the age of 95, while surrounded by her family in Dover-Foxcroft. She lost her husband of 74 years, Raymond, just three years earlier.
She was born Violet Ruby Craig on June 30, 1924, to Leon and Ruby (Brawn) Craig, in Easton, Maine. She was predeceased by her brothers, Chester and Stanley Craig; as well as her sister, Elva Webber. The young family lost their mother far too early and Violet spent her formative years in the loving home of her Aunt Nellie.
By the late 1930's, her brother and sister formed a small country and western band, The Bar-K Buckaroos, to play at local dances. One night at a grange hall she picked out a shy boy in the audience and turned his face bright red by singing "Winking at Me" directly to him. He was smitten with her devilish smile and dimples, within a few years that shy boy would become her husband, Ray.
Violet was active in her community and the United Methodist Church of Dover-Foxcroft where she was a member. She loved her family and always took a special delight in making the holidays special for all of the children in her life. She loved music and art.
She may have been robbed of her memories by the end of her life but she never completely lost that playful spark of mischief in her smile and eyes. With prompting, she still loved to yodel and even drew sketches for the staff.
She is sadly missed by her children, Dennis and Patti Lyford, Thomas and Phyllis Lyford, Joyce and Dick Woodard, Bruce and Paula Lyford; her grandchildren, Michael Lyford, Melissa Starbird, Kathy Bloomberg, Chris Lyford, Andrea Turgeon, Mandi Cotter, Randle Woodard, Kevin Lyford, Emily Lyford; 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family is very grateful for the care provided by Hibbard Nursing Home where she spent the last few years of her life.
A celebration of her life will be announced at a later date. Burial will be in the family lot of the Dover Cemetery, Dover-Foxcroft. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home. Messages of condolence and memories may be expressed at laryfuneralhome.com.
