Valerie Hurd
Charleston - Surrounded by many family and friends, Valerie Hurd, 73, of Charleston Maine, went to be with her Lord on October 6th, 2019. Valerie's personal relationship with Christ and her love for family were the true foundations of her life. Born to Norris and Nellie Wade on August 5th, 1946 in Bangor, Valerie's family moved to Connecticut following WWII. What wonderful memories she had of her childhood years with siblings Russell Wade, Terry Wade, and Robin Hull. Family outings included trips to the beach, picnics in the parks and walks to the local theatre. Valerie was gifted with a lovely voice and musical talent - she enjoyed singing in the high school choir and played the organ and accordion beautifully. She grew up surrounded by her large extended family and found great joy in nurturing these special bonds throughout her entire life.
In 1965, Valerie married the love of her life, Kenneth Hurd. They started their life together in Connecticut before moving "back home" to Maine. Valerie was the loving mother of three children: Kenneth Hurd (deceased), Kelly Hurd and Evan Hurd; grandmother (and mother!) to Josh Hurd, Jacob Hurd, Wyatt Hurd and Preston Hurd; great-grandmother to Arianna Hurd, Colby LeClair, and Josiah Hurd. Valerie found deep joy in being a mother and homemaker to her family. She was a remarkable cook, making yummy baked beans, yeast rolls and her famous apple pie. Holidays were extra-special times, as she and Ken worked side by side in the kitchen preparing a feast for their loved ones. She loved gardening and would harvest and preserve vast quantities of produce to be enjoyed throughout the winter months.
Valerie had a pure, sincere spirit and found joy in the simple things of life. She marveled in the beauty of God's creation - enjoying trips to the Maine coast and long drives with Ken on Maine's back roads. She had an especially tender heart towards all living creatures and enjoyed feeding the woodpeckers and hummingbirds that would come each summer. Perhaps Valerie's greatest gifts were her unconditional love, compassion and kindness. She had an extremely generous heart and would go the extra mile to help those in need.
Valerie's second home was her church community at the Bradford Baptist Church, where she was a loyal member for more than 40 years. She loved Pastor Don's straightforward preaching from the Bible and took great joy in learning and growing in God's word with the tight-knit congregation. She was very active in the Church over the years, singing in the choir, and serving on the Hospitality and Senior Friends Committees. She cherished the many friendships that she had with her brothers and sisters in Christ, and their walk with the Lord.
While we deeply mourn the loss of our beloved Valerie, we rejoice knowing she is reunited with her Lord and Savior. We invite friends and family to join us in fellowship as we celebrate Valerie's remarkable spirit and life.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 12th, 4:00pm at the Bradford Baptist Church, 461 Main Road.

To Kelly, Ken and your extended family,
My condolences to all of you upon the loss of Val. I know, through Kelly’s years at U. of Maine, what a loving and devoted Mom she was and how through her struggles, her faith held her up and kept her strong. Auntie Val - We will always remember your warm heart and sweet laughter. I remember the times you used to set the timer to make me eat - I look back and laugh at how effective that was. All the times we sat and read bible stories. There are so many more great memories I have from the summers John and I spent in Maine. You embodied what it meant to serve the lord - your strength and compassion for others was an inspiration to all of us. I know you'll be watching down on us until we meet again in heaven. We will miss you, but we are comforted knowing where you are now. Saying goodbye is never easy, so I won't - until we meet again in heaven.

My love, thoughts and prayers are with the family. She will be missed. Thankful to have had a couple of long conversations with her in recent months. Growing up I always looked forward to our times together - so many favorite memories come to mind. Val had a sweet gentle spirit, caring and loving way, a sense of humor and a musical laugh. I’m sure she will be singing in heaven and rejoicing with loved ones who have gone on before.
