Trescott Twp., Maine - Suzanne Plaut died at home unexpectedly on November 25, 2025. She was born April 29, 1950, in New York City, and grew up in Rowayton, Connecticut.
She attended King School and then Wellesley College. After college she married Walter Plaut Jr.; they taught at the Fessenden School in Massachusetts, purchased part of the Moores farm in Trescott and came up summers to work on a log cabin. Suzanne swam most of the logs for the cabin across a cove to get them to their building site. In 1975 they moved into the cabin and that first winter it burned down - they experienced very early on the support that is possible from a close-knit community of hard workers.
Suzanne was known by many as the long-time library director at Lubec Memorial Library, where she volunteered and worked for more than 40 years. Her favorite part of the week was Wednesday's Wiggles and Giggles program - where she read to children for as long as they wanted, including the week before she passed. She was a longtime member of the Cobscook Monthly Meeting of Friends (Quakers) and helped build the meeting house in Whiting. She was a talented cultivator of plants and trees; into her 70's she would still miss meals when she was digging in the dirt and often come in for dinner covered in clods of mud or gobs of grafting tar. She knit beautiful slippers, mittens, and Christmas stockings throughout the years until carpal tunnel syndrome took knitting away from her; then she put even more energy into dilly beans, jams, and elderberry syrup. Suzanne was known for her handcrafting and gardening skills as much as for her generosity and kindness.
Suzanne was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Walter Plaut Jr.; her father, Abbett Post; and her mother, Joan (Post) Parker. She is survived by her children, Jennifer and Ethan Plaut, and their spouses, LeRoy Danielson and Vanessa Scurci; and six lucky grandchildren, Soren and Ira Danielson, and Amaia, Oona, Willa, and Luca Plaut. She is also survived by her sister and brother, Nata and John Post, and their spouses, children and grandchildren.
A celebration of Suzanne's life will be held Saturday, December 13, at 1 p.m. at the Lubec School, with light refreshments and fellowship to follow. Please bring food, photos, and memories to share. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lubec Memorial Library, or please read a book to someone in her honor.
