Susan Virginia Hoffman Obituary

Etna, Maine - Susan Virginia (VanWormer) Hoffman, 78, passed away peacefully at home on April 1, 2026. She was born in upstate New York to parents Willard and Virginia VanWormer.

After traveling the country, she settled in Maine, where she was a dedicated wife and mother, and homesteaded for several years, and then made Etna her home. She lived a life grounded in faith, service, and creativity. She was deeply involved in her church communities and carried a strong commitment to philanthropy throughout her life. A highly skilled seamstress, she spent many years sewing, including creating specialty items and faith-related pieces. Later, she became an occupational therapy technician and went on to start her own business, combining her passion for helping others with her sewing expertise by creating weighted blankets for individuals in the autism community.

She had a lifelong love of music and played piano and string instruments. Susan also found great joy in the outdoors, particularly tending to her Iris gardens. She developed a handicapped-accessible recreational and fishing dock on her property for others to enjoy and traveled to Uganda in support of missionary efforts focusing on teaching sewing to many in that region.

She is survived by her sisters, Nancy and Judy; her brother, Dixon; and their families. She is also survived by her children, Doug, Pamela, Jesse and wife, Sara, and Jeremiah and wife, Janna; and her grandchildren, Nicole, Amanda, Christie, Jake, Sophia, Tatum, Wyatt, Jacob, and Julia.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at Emmanuel Bible Baptist Church, 1913 Moosehead Trail, Plymouth, ME 04969. Donations may be made to Emmanuel Bible Baptist Church, which supports both Hope and Mercy Mission, and Samaritans Purse - Operation Christmas Child.
