Winterport, Maine - Suellen Thompson Jagels, the eldest of four sisters and one brother, passed away on October 31, 2025. She was born on May 26, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of William and Marion (DeSutter) Thompson.
After completing high school in West Chicago, she attended the University of Illinois, where she earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in biology. While in graduate school, she met and later married Richard Jagels.
After a short stint in Edmonton, Alberta, they moved to Vermont, where Dick began his academic career at the University of Vermont and Sue taught junior high school and tutored at an unwed mother's home. Soon, she decided to pursue a degree in library science, diligently commuting weekly to SUNY, Albany campus. On the move again, Sue and Dick-relocated to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where Sue completed her library science degree. Finally, in 1979, they moved to Maine, where they found their forever home. Sue was soon hired as the library director at Eastern Maine Medical Center (now Northern Light) and, capitalizing on her academic training in biology and library science, she soon transformed the Hadley Perrot Health Science Library into a world-class source for the latest in applied medical research, providing rapid online information for physicians and staff. She served as library director for 28 years, even after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She is fondly remembered by her EMMC colleagues.
In addition to traveling to many parts of the world, Sue and Dick spent happy hours enjoying their riverside Winterport home, where Sue was also active in the Winterport Historical Association. As outdoors enthusiasts, they spent many days boating on Maine's lakes and rivers, where Dick tortured fish and Sue trained her binoculars on birds, hoping to add to her life list. After 28 years of bravely fighting cancer, Sue died in her 'second home' at EMMC Hospice Care, surrounded by her husband, sister, and friends.
Suellen is survived by her husband, Richard; her sisters, Peggy Miller, Maryanne Clark, and Kathleen Dabbert; her brother-in-law, Fred Jagels; nieces and nephews, Betty (Don) Jackley, Amy Wolfe, Robert (Leslie) Dabbert, Colleen (Tony) Pike, Christine (Kester)Jeffers, Rebecca Clark, Will Clark, Sarah (Hamin) Tien, Rick (Kimberly) Miller, Bridget (Alex) Donelson, and many great-nieces and great-nephews, and beloved friends. Sue was preceded in death by her parents, William and Marion (DeSutter) Thompson; her mother-in-law, Catherine Prescott Jagels; and her brother, James Thompson.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.
