STOCKTON SPRINGS - STOCKTON SPRINGS - Sterling G. Harriman, 68, died Sept. 15, 2009, at a Bangor hospital. He was born April 8, 1941, in Stockton Springs, the son of Willard and Olive (Tootill) Harriman. Sterling was raised in Stockton Springs and graduated from Stockton Springs High School in 1959. In June of that year he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in France. After his honorable discharge, Sterling lived in England for the next 16 years before returning to Maine. He worked at St. Regis - Champion for 16 years, and for the past 14 years as a bus driver for SAD 34. Sterling was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed woodworking in his spare time. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and Masons, and was very active in the American Legion and the 40/8, holding such offices as Waldo County and district five commander, and Grande Chef de Gare du Maine, 1998-1999. Sterling was founder of the Steamboat Petroleum - Waldo County Wildcats American Legion baseball team, an organization he loved. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen of Stockton Springs; son, David Harriman and wife, Loraine, of Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, England; son, Neil Harriman of Ellsworth; daughter, Sarah and husband, Mark Coen, of Beverly, Mass.; and daughter, Lisa and husband, Paul Boselli, of Rockland, Mass. The lights of his life were his three grandchildren, Fay Elizabeth Harriman, Natasha Rose Harriman and Joseph John Coen. He is also survived by his sister, Laura and husband, Joseph Harriman; brother, Rodney and wife, Ruth, all of Stockton Springs; many nephews, nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, George, Richard, Philip and Willard; sisters, Isabel and Esther; and by his first wife, Mary Elizabeth McNaught, mother of David and Neil. Family and friends are invited 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at Young Funeral Home, 31 West Main St., Searsport, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to benefit the Steamboat Petroleum American Legion Baseball Team, care of Chuck Berube, director - Maine Legion Baseball, 123 Second St., Auburn, ME 04210.
