Sharon Cole McPhail

May 22, 1942 - February 18, 2019

Bar Harbor - Sharon Cole McPhail,76, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2019 after a long and courageous battle with heart disease and cancer. Sharon was born in Bangor, Maine on May 22, 1942 the daughter of Chesley R Cole and Paula L Cole. She graduated from Bangor High School in 1960 and went on to Endicott Junior College in Beverly, Mass.

Sharon had a special way with people that made them all feel comfortable. Everywhere she went and everyone she met liked that gregarious way and loveable smile. She loved life and dedicated it to her family and was a wonderful and passionate wife, mother and grandmother. Sharon made baking an art and knit dozens of special blankets for anyone who wanted one. To all her grand children she was ''NANNY GIRL". No one liked to shop more, and she would spend hours looking for just the right gift. Like her father, Christmas was the most important holiday and she did it like no one else.

She moved over a dozen times following her beloved husband Jim of 55 years around the country. Not always easy, Sharon reveled in the challenges and made it work for her whole family. The final stop, Bar Harbor, Maine where she designed and oversaw the complete renovation of a 135 year old house, which she loved more than any other.

Sharon loved to write poems and did so her whole life. In 2017, she wrote and published her first book titled ELECTROCUTES. The book was inspired by her youngest son Torrie.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her grandson, James Curtis McPhail, IV and her sister Amy.

Sharon is survived by her husband Jim, daughter Kiersten Donahue and sons Jay McPhail and wife Sandy and Torrie McPhail and wife Leslie. Also four grand children, two great grand children and four sisters. Sharon will be buried later this summer in a private ceremony at Seal Harbor, Maine.

Donations in Sharon's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island #300, Topsham, ME 04086 and the American Heart Association, 51 US-1 #M, Scarborough, ME 04074.

Funeral Arrangements are made by Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mt. Desert. Condolences may be expressed at

Saddened by the news of Sharon's passing. Not having made contact with Sharon and Jim for over 50 years was not sufficient to erase memories made during and after high school. Recall the disappointment in 2000 when they were not in attendance of the joint "59 and "60 BHS reunion. My wife Julie and I visited them at their first (I believe) house in Bangor and met their very young daughter Kiersten. Had always hoped that one day to join them for lunch.

Please know how sorry I am to learn of Sharon's passing. We were next door neighbors on Essex Street growing up together with the Cole girls. Have so many memories. Sharon was full of life from the start. She was my brother's date for the Senior Prom. My sincere condolences to Jim and family.

Our friendship was so very special. I will always miss our nightly calls - Sharon had a great sense of humor and we both laughed until it hurt. Love you my dear friend!

That laugh, those smiles, the welcome that was there for everyone! Sharon once told me “there is always enough love for one more” and that was how she lived her life. I met Sharon and Jimmy when I entered 9th grade. We walked home from school together, went to each other’s parties, we shared teenage years with joy and friendship. As adults we came to love and care about each other no mater how sparse the visits or how often we spoke. She was just Sharon, always there, always welcoming with “Hello, friend”. What a blessing to have her in my life all these years. God bless her Jimmy for the way he loved her and cared for her, and lovely Kissy, devoted to the last moment. Rest I...n Peace, Sharon. Another angel is among us.Read more

To my other Mother - I wanted to send you this heavenly message. As I know you will be watching over your family we will all be looking up at you. As the brightest star only one could imagine. It will be you that will shine. Until we meet again or as you would say " See you on the flip side"
