Unity - Sandra Lynn Fowler, 81, of Unity, Maine, passed away at home, July 26th, 2019 after a long illness with her family by her side.
She is the daughter of the late Grace and Ralph Cust, and was also predeceased by her brother, Stephen Cust.
Sandra graduated from Bangor High School in 1956. She attended Husson College School of Business where she received her Associate Degree, and then attended the University of Maine at Orono where she received a BA in Education. She was an elementary school teacher in Brewer, Maine for 27 years, then taught English as a Second Language for 6 years until her retirement.
She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Wells and her husband Bryan Wells, of Old Town, and her daughter Robin Fowler Pratt and her wife Corry Pratt, of Unity.
Sandy loved studying and learning about science and nature. She was a veracious reader and loved nothing better than holding a real book. When she transitioned to reading with a Kindle, she read 827 e-books in her last six years of life. Her greatest joy came from her 2 daughters. She loved talking about their accomplishments with friends and loved ones and was never shy to share with complete strangers.
Family and friends are welcome to attend an open-house celebration of Sandy's life at her daughter's home at Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm, 141 Crosby Brook Rd., Unity, Maine, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., Saturday, September 7th, 2019.
In keeping with Sandy's love for education and for people-young and old, she requested that in her memory, please consider a Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm Tour Sponsorship for schools, camps, seniors, veterans, scouts and other organizations to continue to receive free educational tours. Rest peacefully, Sandy. You have earned your time to be pain-free. You were a much stronger lady than you ever gave yourself credit for. You were a mother doing the job of two parents for your daughters in a time when it wasn't as common as today and didn't ask for assistance - even when you could or should have. You had a long and successful career in teaching, enhancing the lives of countless children. You showed the doctors 10 years ago that told you, "it wouldn't be long", that you just were not going to give up. You came to live with us and continued to show everyone how tough you were. I know you gave credit to the alpacas and your good care, but you had an internal gift of not s...eeing 'struggles' as pain. You had a way of looking at the brightest side possible in nearly every situation. You used to say you admired my strength, but that certainly went both ways. I believe you felt safe in our hands as you left this part of your journey. You have left a very large void in our life and our home. We miss you. You will always be in my heart. Thank you for the lessons I learned from you!Read more

I knew her as Mrs Fowler. My 3 kids attended the Brewer schools, and she was their teacher. She was the sweetest, kindest person I’ve ever known, and a great teacher

So glad to have met Sandy and you through volunteering with Palliative Care at EMMC all those years ago! She trumped way beyond what Drs said and I love that! Happy to have spent time with her a few weeks ago. Love you all.
