Russell J. Ames Obituary

Verona Island and Brewer, Maine - Russell J. Ames of Brewer passed away peacefully at home on September 1, 2025, after a period of declining health, including Parkinson's. He was born April 16, 1934, in Harrington, ME.

He graduated from Bucksport High School, served in the Bangor National Guard and as a sergeant in the army. He had a very successful and professional career in the papermaking industry for 35+ years, making trips to other mill locations in the U.S. and Europe. After early retirement from the mill, he continued to work for 3+ years consulting on construction projects at Bucksport. During his busy life, Russell was a Boy Scout leader, on the school board in Penobscot, a member of the Rod and Gun Club on Verona, as well as first selectman.

Russell loved his family unconditionally, putting us before himself. Likewise, he was fiercely loved by us and will be very much missed. Russell enjoyed hunting, fishing, working and spending time in the great outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy; son, Rusty (Cecelia); grandson, Rustin; and his great-granddaughters, Sophia and Stella; his daughter, Sherry Brodeur (Blain); grandson, Corey Stearns; his stepdaughter, Stacia Fredericks (Tom); stepgrandson, Mason (Rose); his brother, Bob and sister-in-law, Lorre; brother-in-law, Norm Hill (Linda); sister-in-law, Betty Esler; his granddog, Adrian; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, all very special to him. Russell was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Esther Bowden and Marguerite; brother, Arlo; the mother of his children, Isabelle; his brother-in-law, Barry Esler; and sister-in-law, Debbie Gray.

At his request, there will be a graveside service in the spring. A very special thanks goes out to all the staff at Saint Joseph Home Health and Hospice and his special caregivers for all the great care and love they showed him.
