Washington, Maine - Robert "Bob" Frank Steinmeyer, 81, of Washington, passed away peacefully at the Sussman House in Rockport, on September 21, 2024, with his loving family by his side. Bob was born on January 8, 1943, in New York, to parents Frank E. and Dorothy (Finn) Steinmeyer.

Bob lived the first two years of his life near the trains, for which he came to love. His family then moved to Sidney, Maine, on the beloved family farm, "Wind Cliff," where he grew up alongside his brothers working the dairy farm and selling milk to Augusta and area residents.

Bob graduated from Cony High School in 1961, and then went on to attend the University of Maine at Orono for a year. He then joined the Army National Guard from 1962 to 1968. He had many jobs, from doing the route delivery for Cushman Bakery Company, selling cars for Coe Chevrolet in Augusta, and route delivery for Kirschner's Meat Company. He went on to work as a survey crew member, then draftsman, for CMP from 1971 to 1974. In 1975, he began his journey of driving a school bus, beginning at Windsor Elementary for 4 years, and then onto MSAD (RSU) 40 for over 38 years. He also drove the bus for Luce Transportation, and Med-O-Lark Camp in Washington.

During his bus driving career, Bob took courses to become certified as a school bus driver instructor. He was in the Mid-Coast and Maine State Road-E-O competitions, winning first place in 1998, and second place in 1995, in the Midcoast Regional Competition, totaling 5 trophies.

In 1972, Bob married the love of his life, Verona Faye Moore, and they were married 52 years. From 1972 to 1979, they lived in Windsor, before moving back to Washington, his wife's hometown, in 1979 where they have resided since.

When Bob asked what he loved about driving the school bus, he would always say, "I love driving, I love the kids. They are my extended family. I know many of them when they were born." He loved you all, he said so until his last breath.

In his free time, Bob enjoyed driving, exploring new places, tinkering and doing mechanic work, and model trains. He was also a member of the Wiscasset, Waterville, and Farmington Railway Museums.

Bob was predeceased by his parents; son-in-law, John J. Crane IV.; in-laws, Lester and Delia Moore; and a brother, Henry "Carl" Steinmeyer. He is survived by his wife, Verona; stepdaughter, Tami Bryant Crane and her son, John Crane V., of Port Clyde; daughter, Nicole Steinmeyer Ladner and husband, Gary, of Gardiner, and their children, Kristen and Meagan; son, Douglas Steinmeyer and wife, Tracy, of Rangeley, and his children, Allison, Emmit (Emily), and Jacob; brother, Ray Steinmeyer and wife, Ruth, of Sidney, and his daughter, Leah of Bizby, AZ, and her children; sister-in-law, Eileen Steinmeyer of Vermont, and her children, Michael of California, Cheryl Hulbert and husband, Scott, of Vermont, and their children, and Lisa Pitrowiski of Vermont, and her children; many great-nieces and great-nephews; and very close friends.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2024, from 1-4 p.m. at Prescott Memorial School, 100 Waldoboro Rd., Washington, ME. In lieu of flowers, letters may be mailed to Bob's wife Verona at 10 Steinmeyer Rd., Washington, ME 04574. Memorial donations may be made in Bob's name to the Union Ambulance Service, P.O.
