Carmel - Robert O. Sibley, 92, died on March 10, 2019 after a brief illness. He was born October 23, 1926 in Bangor, the son of Frank and Sarah (Reed) Sibley.

Robert was raised in Bangor until his mother passed when he was 4. He and a brother went to the Bangor Children's Home, where he remained for several years, until he moved to Vanceboro to live with his father and siblings.

In 1941 he joined the U.S. Navy where he served on the U.S.S. Alaska, and participated in the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Robert went on to spend 17 years working for Maine Central Railroad, followed by Emery Waterhouse, and Trustworthy Hardware Store where he delivered hardware supplies to stores in small towns, making friends everywhere he went. He entertained many with his stories of his childhood experiences at the orphanage, adventures in Vanceboro and the war. He was known for having a special gadget for any job and if he couldn't get it at the store, he built it.

Robert is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy (Gould) Sibley; son, Robert R. Sibley; daughter, Susan Garland and husband, Robert; daughter-in-law, Idris Lee; grandchildren, Shad, Renee, Joshua, and Reed; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; brother, Galen Sibley; many nieces and nephews, including two special nieces, Glenice and Theresa. In addition to his parents and 8 siblings,
Robert was predeceased by his son, Michael Lee; and grandson, John Garland.

There will be a graveside service at a future date. Condolences to the family may expressed at

My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
I have many fond memories of Mr. Sibley.
My twin Carron and I would visit often in our school days as his daughter Susan was our best friend.
He would make us breakfast when we would spend the night and always made us feel special. We loved him very much! He will be sadly missed.

My condolences to Susan and her family. You were a faithful daughter and such a great help to your Mom and Dad. It looks like your Dad had a tough start but wonderful life. You should be very proud. How lucky was your Mom to have him care for her so beautifully. Please take care of yourselves and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
