Yarmouth, Maine - Robert "Bruce" MacKay, 89, died peacefully December 15, 2018, following a brief illness with his devoted family by his side.
Bruce was born in Jamaica Plain, MA, where he grew up with his parents, three brothers and two sisters, all of whom predeceased him. He attended Boston English High School and went on to earn his degree from Northeastern University. Immediately following graduation, Bruce was inducted into the U.S. Army and served two years during the Korean War.
Bruce was employed at Nuclear Metals, Inc. (NMI) in Concord, MA, and served in various capacities for over 30 years before retiring as Vice President of Manufacturing.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Rosemary; his son, Donald MacKay and his wife, Susan, of Veazie, ME; and his daughter, Alison Moore and her husband, Jack, of Yarmouth, ME. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Lydia and Stuart MacKay and Sean, James and Michael Moore.
While growing up in Jamaica Plain, Bruce developed a keen interest in astronomy. He joined an amateur telescope club where he made his own telescope. He enjoyed sharing this interest with his children and grandchildren on many a clear night. He had a lifelong love of animals and birds, always protecting and caring for them. In later years, Bruce focused on sorting out his large stamp collection.
Above all, Bruce will be remembered for his kindness, gentleness and decency. He was always ready to help and encourage family members, friends and strangers. He was never too busy to offer a helping hand. His presence will be sorely missed, but he will be in our hearts forever.
Arrangements are in the care of the Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.
