Bangor, Maine - It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert T. "Bob" Millett at Maine Medical Center in Portland after complications from heart disease one day shy of his 75th birthday, with his wife, daughter and grandson by his side. He was born in Bangor to Edward and Mary (Blake) Millett, and spent his formative years attending St. John Elementary, John Bapst and graduated from Bangor High School in 1968. After a brief stint at UMaine, Bob joined the Air National Guard.
Always a devilish child and being the restless young man that he was, the travel bug took over early and he backpacked around Europe spending time in Germany, Italy and a memorable month on the Isle of Crete, where he made lifelong friends. Those restless years also led him to spend time in
Key West and Las Vegas before returning home to settle down in Bangor.
He worked in various positions at UniFirst Corp for 43 years, drove motor coach for Cyr Bus Line as a hobby/retirement job fulfilling his love for the road and enjoying the many people he met along the way. He never forgot a face and inevitability met someone he knew most everywhere he traveled. A lover of all sports, Bob played football at Bapst, was on the swim team at Bangor High, golfed, played racket ball, ran road races and had a trophied bowling career, even winning a state title before multiple shoulder surgeries sidelined him. He was an avid UMaine hockey fan and traveled to many college and pro football, basketball, baseball games, golf tournaments and NASCAR races. A doting father, together with Michele, they climbed Mt. Katahdin, white water rafted and attended World Youth Day in Paris, France among other memorable times. A member of the Bangor HOG chapter he and Teresa rode many miles with their Harley family of friends, but he eventually gave up two wheels for four and in later years could be seen tripping around in his little convertible still satisfying his longing for the open road.
Bob was a loved, respected and dedicated 35-year member of AA and generously gave his wisdom and support to anyone struggling with alcohol addiction. After being given the gift of sobriety he lived his life in a humble and spiritual way that brought a certain calmness to he and others that will be forever remembered. Well known for his quick wit and smart aleck barbs, they were the essence of this man and he could usually put a smile on your face. Making people laugh was his great joy.
He was predeceased by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Gloria Millett; and father and mother-in-law, Winston and Marlene Stubbs. Bob is survived by the love of his life, Teresa (Stubbs) Millett; his daughter and the light of his life, Michele Merrill and her husband, Roy, of Somersworth, NH; grandson, Logan Connors; granddaughter, Emily Connors; brother, Frank Millett and his wife, Sandra; special nieces, Julie Gross and Kimberly Millett and their families; cousins, close friends and dear best friend, John Foley.
The family thanks the wonderful cardiac staff at Northern Light EMMC, LifeFlight of Maine and Maine Medical Center for their excellent care and compassion during his last days.
We ask that when you think of Bob, you raise your face to the sky, say a prayer, rev your engine and smile.
There will be a celebration of life Sunday, October 26, 1-4 p.m. at Seasons Restaurant (downstairs banquet room), 427 Main St., Bangor.
