Beals, Maine - Robert Wilton Alley Sr., a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Navy veteran, educator, lobsterman, public servant, and one of Downeast Maine's most magnificent storytellers, returned to the arms of the Savior on August 2, 2026, at the age of 78, in his home on Beals Island, surrounded by his large, loving family. Born March 23, 1948, Robert was the son of the late Herbert Wilton Alley and Evelyn Myrtle (Merchant) Alley. His was a life deeply rooted in the communities, waters, and people of Washington County - a life defined by service to his country, his neighbors, and, above all, his family.

Robert met his sweetheart, Hazel Irene "Hazo" Beale, in 1965. They married on November 4, 1967, beginning a partnership that would endure for nearly 59 years. Their life together was filled with hard work, public service, family gatherings, enduring friendships and stories - always stories. Robert could take a memory from years ago and bring it fully to life, filling a room with laughter and making everyone listening feel as though they had been there beside him.

A member of the Beals High School, class of 1966, Robert enlisted in the United States Navy following graduation. Shortly after his marriage to Hazel, he departed for Vietnam in December 1967. He served his country for 28 years, completing four years of active duty and another 24 years in the Navy Reserve. His military service remained an important part of who he was, and his commitment to fellow veterans continued throughout his life.

Robert believed deeply in education and the opportunities it could create. He graduated from the University of Maine at Machias in 1977, majoring in mathematics and minoring in science, education, and psychology. He went on to serve Washington County students and families as an educator and administrator in several school districts. Before guiding students through classrooms and school systems, he had also worked as a carpenter and helped build Jonesport-Beals High School - the same school where his family and community would later gather to remember his life.

The sea was never far from Robert's heart or his hands. He held a lobsterman's license for more than 60 years and took particular pride in apprenticing his grandchildren so they could earn licenses of their own. In doing so, he passed along more than the mechanics of a trade. He shared a heritage, a sense of responsibility, and a way of life that had shaped generations of his family and community.

Robert served on various local shellfish committees, and his working life touched nearly every facet of the seafood industry. Through his business, Harborside Seafood, he operated as a seafood dealer and also worked for other local dealers including Looks Lobster and Atlantic Shellfish. For 18 years, he ran what became affectionately known as the "worm hearse" to Wiscasset - a chapter of his working life that supplied him with countless stories.

His knowledge of Maine's fisheries, wildlife, coastal communities and rural way of life later informed his work in Augusta. Robert represented the people of his district in the Maine House of Representatives from 2014 through 2022. During his legislative service, he served on the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee and the Marine Resources Committee.

Robert never forgot the people and the place from which he came. He worked to protect the institutions, livelihoods and services that mattered to Downeast Maine. Among the efforts closest to his heart were his fights to keep the Maine Veterans' Home and the prison open in Washington County. He also helped to secure a grant supporting construction of the Beals-Jonesport Bridge, strengthening a literal and symbolic connection between the communities he loved.

Long before his time in the Legislature, Robert served his neighbors in numerous ways, including as constable of Beals Island alongside his longtime friend, Anthony Beal Sr. Whether the job was official or simply something that needed doing, Robert stepped forward. Public service was not merely a position he held; it was the way he lived.

Robert also knew how to have fun. He loved racing lobster boats and muscle cars, particularly his 1966 Chevelle SS and 1970 Chevelle SS. From 1988 through 1992, he served on the World's Fastest Lobster Boat Races Committee, an experience he thoroughly enjoyed. In his younger years, he was an avid hunter.

Some of Robert's happiest memories were tied to Head Harbor Island and time spent with family at the "Antler Inn." He loved retelling those stories, preserving the characters, adventures and misadventures of earlier days. In Robert's hands, family history was never a collection of distant facts. It was alive, vivid and usually very funny. His stories connected generations, and through those who heard and loved them, they will continue to be told.

Robert was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Allan Ernest Alley Sr., and Allan's wife, Christine; his sister-in-law, Linda Beale; and his longtime friend, Anthony Beal Sr. He is survived by his adoring wife, Hazel; and their beloved children: his daughter, Bridgette Renee Alley and her partner, Brent Davis Jr., of Addison; his son, Robert Wilton Alley Jr., and his wife, Angel, of Addison; and his son, Jeffrey Scott Alley and his wife, Lindsey, of Jonesport. He is also survived by his treasured grandchildren: Renee Jordan-Chandler and her husband, Dwight, Brandee Hall and her husband, Andrew, Benjamin Beal and his fiancée, Kayla, Travis Alley and his wife, Ashley, and Hannah Snowman and her husband, Hunter; and cherished great-grandchildren, Khloei, Khinlei and Koeltin Chandler, Indie and Isaac Hall, Alaina Beal, Cohen Alley, and Silas and Josie Snowman. Robert is further survived by his brothers, Ellery Anson Alley and his girlfriend, Charity, and Colon S. Morrill Alley and his wife, Joy; his brothers-in-law, Jack Beale and his wife, Ruth, and Earlon Beale and his partner, Katie; sister-in-law, Anisa (Beale) Cokayne and her husband, Harold; sister-in-law by heart, Elizabeth Alley; and his goddaughter, Lisa Neylon and her husband, John, of New Hampshire. He leaves behind his special nieces and nephews, Laura Beale, Norman Beal, Sheila Dugan, Allan Alley Jr. and his wife, Bobbie, and their family, Arlin Alley and his wife, Raelea, and their family, Anson Alley and his wife, Leigh, and their family, Bronson Alley and his partner, Jessica, and their family, Amanda Alley, Logan Alley and his wife, Kirsten. Marisa Tilley and her husband, Jeremy, and their family, and Bryan Mitchell. Robert leaves behind precious fur babies Tiny Tim, his support dog, and Daisy Mae; and a circle of beloved cousins, extended family, dear friends, former colleagues, and community members who will long remember his friendship and his service.

To describe Robert simply by the positions he held or the work he accomplished would be to tell only part of his story. His true legacy lives in the people he served, the family he loved, the traditions he passed down, and the stories he leaves behind. He understood that a Downeast community is built not only through laws, bridges, schools, and working waterfronts, but also through loyalty, humor, shared memories, and the willingness to lend a hand.

Those who knew Robert will remember his unmistakable presence, his devotion to Hazel and their family, his pride in Washington County, and his ability to hold an audience with a story that grew richer with every telling. His voice will be deeply missed, but the stories - and the love they carried - will remain.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 9, 2026, at the Jonesport-Beals High School gymnasium, with Pastors Andy Phillips and Matthew Beal officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
