Southwest Harbor, Maine - The Reverend David K. Mills, 90, went to be with his Lord on February 9, 2021. David was born October 17, 1930, in Evanston, Illinois, son of Ellsworth L. and Mary Roberts Mills.
He graduated from Williams College in 1952 and went on to the Episcopal Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia. David met Audrey Sands in 1955 and they were married at Trinity Episcopal Church in Newton Centre, Massachusetts in 1956. He then served at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pontiac, Michigan. David and Audrey moved with their children, Peter and Sarah, to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1959, where he became the rector of the Church of our Savior. He served there for 13 years. David was a prominent civil rights leader during the 1960's in Cincinnati. He and members of the church marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in Selma, in 1965. In 1972, the Lord told David to move to Maine and start the Mount Desert Oceanarium. For 46 years, David ministered through teaching about the creation.
David's loving family includes his wife of 64 years, Audrey; brother, Ellsworth L. Mills II; son, Peter and wife, Desiree; daughter, Sarah and late husband, Bob; his grandchildren, Danielle and husband, Luka, Susanne and husband, Stephen, Samuel and wife, Laura; great-grandchildren, Soren, Brayden, Harmony, Preston, Kaitlynn, Annabelle, Abram, Mary and Samuel David Jr.
A service will be held at a later date. Donations in David's memory may be sent to Pacific Garden Mission, a Chicago based organization supporting the homeless with Christ centered-care. Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com
