Northport, Maine - Ralph Lindsay Flanders Robinson, 94, passed away peacefully in his home in Bayside on September 9, 2024. Ralph was born in Belfast, ME, on September 9, 1930.
As a child, he spent his summers in Bayside and winters in Chicago. His education includes the Latin School of Chicago, Milton Academy and Harvard, where he graduated with a B.A. in English.
He was an avid sports player his entire life. He was the captain of the Milton basketball team. He was a member of the Belfast Merchants semi pro baseball team in 1950. In 1952, he was on the Harvard Boston Herald All Star Team, where he won The Princeton Ivy League medal for Stolen Base Leader and the Wendell Bat as Harvard's leading offensive player. He was an avid tennis player throughout the years and played until his 92nd birthday.
After Harvard, Ralph served as a Naval officer during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954.
When he left the Navy, he started his remarkable career as a ballet dancer. He was a principal dancer for the Ballet of Nice in France, where he met his wife, Jeanne-Marie Aubert. He also danced with the Chicago Opera. He danced with many significant dancers of the time, including Igor Youskevitch, Melissa Hayden, Maria Tallchief and Rudolph Nuryev.
In 1975, he and his wife founded the Robinson Ballet Company that still finds its home in Bangor. After he retired, the company was run by his nephew, Keith Robinson and his wife, Maureen Lynch Robinson.
During his retirement, he wrote a self-published book, Play Ball(et), about his time as both a baseball player and ballet dancer. He was an avid reader, did multiple crosswords a day and enjoyed his cocktail hour on his front lawn with his friends and family. In the final years of his life, he shared his home with his daughter, Maya, her two dogs and two cats.
Ralph was predeceased by his wife, Jeanne-Marie Aubert Robinson. He is survived by his daughter, Maya Robinson; his nephew, Keith Robinson and his wife, Maureen Robinson; his nieces, Lyn, Laura, Ricky and Mary; and his great-nephew, Ian Robinson, his partner, Rachel and his daughter, Viola Osborne-Robinson.
