Ragna Bruno Torkanowsky Obituary

Hancock, Maine - Ragna Bruno Torkanowsky passed away at home, surrounded by her family, on April 6, 2026, as a beautiful sunset brushed the sky with orange.

Ragna, a gifted fine artist, sculptor, and abstract painter, possessed a rare sensibility: she sought and found beauty in all things. During the Covid-19 pandemic, as the world mourned, she created a series of nine paintings that contemplated passage into the other realm - works marked, with uncanny prescience, by the recurring image of a blackening sunset, lit by wisps of orange symbolizing hope for the living. Ragna held a singular devotion to her studio in Hancock Point, Maine, designed by her son and daughter-in-law. There, in quiet solitude, she worked through every season, finding both refuge and inspiration in the earth's rhythm. Her work can be found in art museums and private collections.

A citizen of the world, Ragna spent her childhood across Germany, Sweden, and Spain, followed by additional schooling in Switzerland and England. Speaking four languages fluently, Ragna became the trusted authority on period-specific Spanish frames in Europe; her expertise reflected in the museums who sought out her frames to hold works of the masters, such as Velázquez and El Greco. Later she traveled throughout Europe as a concert empresario and cofounder of Ibermusica, an international concert and music management company. It was during this time that she met her husband, Werner Torkanowsky, an internationally distinguished conductor and violinist, who brought her life to Maine. Their partnership was shaped by a shared love of music and deep appreciation for the arts.

Ragna was predeceased by her son, Juan; her husband, Werner; her sister, Diana; and her brother, Hell. She is survived by her devoted sons, Santiago and Blas; her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth; her granddaughter, Olivia and her husband, James; her dear sisters, Cristina and Renate; and a loving circle of nephews, nieces, as well as many close friends.

A private family gathering will be held in June. Ragna will be laid to rest beside her beloved Werner at Riverside Cemetery in Hancock, Maine. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Hancock Grammar School, the SPCA of Hancock County, or the Maine Cancer Foundation.
