Sarasota - Phillip F. McFarland passed away quietly on November 5, 2018, in Sarasota, Florida, after a long illness. He was born September 25, 1924, in Trenton, ME, the son of Iva (Stairs) and Jay S. McFarland.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. After the war, he graduated from Becker Junior College in 1949. It was there that he met Marilyn L. Munson. They were married on June 4, 1949.
Phil began his career as a representative for Remington Rand selling adding machines. In 1950 he became office manager for Atwood Motor Company in Bangor, ME. He took a similar position with White Chevrolet in New York in 1953. He returned to Atwood Motor Company in 1955, again as office manager. He later became sales manager, then general manager overseeing the construction and move to Hogan Road in Bangor. He purchased the dealership from the estate of Myron Foster in 1968.
During his long career, he was active in many business and professional organizations. He was president of the National Association of Accountants, as well as the New England Dodge Dealers Advertising Association, the New England Dodge Dealers Advisory Council. He was also past president of Penobscot Valley Country Club and served on the Veazie School Committee.
Phil loved the outdoors. His passions included golf, hunting, fishing and being on the water. He was known for his delicious lobster stew and his spicy spaghetti sauce.
He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Leslie, Robert and Vernon; and sister Marion. His wife of 57 years, "Munsie," died in September 2006. He is survived by his daughter, Marci McFarland of Sarasota, FL; son, Phillip M McFarland and wife, Cheryl Wixson, of Stonington, ME; and grandchildren, Natalya and Nikolai Laliberty of Sarasota, FL, Laurel McFarland of St .Louis, MO, Emily McFarland and husband, Kent Monroe, of Dryden, NY, and Joanna McFarland and husband, Jesse Tea of Singapore.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11:30 a.m. November 10, 2018, at the Church of the Palms, Sarasota, FL. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the Alzheimer's Association or the charity of your choice. Arrangements by Toale Brothers. Condolences may be sent to
