Newport - Philip Wayne Williams, Sr., 77, died March 17, 2019 at a Bangor hospital. He was born May 23, 1941 in Bridgeport, CT, the only child of Lawrence and Irene (Pennewell) Williams. He graduated from Newport High School, Class of 1959.
Phil was a man that loved to laugh and to make others laugh. "You can either laugh or cry at the situation, so you might as well laugh," he used to say. Phil had many interests and passions--fishing, the Red Sox, trains, and woodworking. He was a member of the Dexter Pentecostal Church and was often called a good friend in sobriety. Phil was a good father and wonderful grandfather. One of his greatest loves was his wife, Lucy. In their nearly 21 years of marriage, they traveled, made new friends and went to gospel concerts around the state. His children often called him a "social butterfly" after he met Lucy. It was a beautiful transformation.
Phil was predeceased by his son, Philip, Jr. and grandson, Tobin Archer. He will be missed by his wife, Lucille of Newport; 4 daughters, Bonnie Williams and husband Steve McLain of Trenton, Holly Williams and husband Walter Chapin of Levant, Jean-Marie and husband Paul Lalicata of Dexter, and April and husband Richard Archer of Corinna; a son, Michael Spencer of Nashua, NH; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and many friends and cousins.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Friday, March 22nd, at the Dexter Pentecostal Church with Pastor Lyman Curtis officiating. Spring burial will be in the Corinthian Cemetery, Corinth. I met Mr. Williams, through his son Phil, at a couple of family gatherings, and immediately knew Phil got his sense of humor from his Dad. He was a pleasant man, and talked with me like I'd always been around. He inspired me with the many changes he went through, to find better health and happiness. He was good folk. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and all who loved him.

Dear Sir, I’m sorry that I never had the opportunity to meet you in person. But by knowing your daughter, her heart, kindness and bright humor, I have met you. You raised a great woman. I know you will be deeply missed. Bright blessings to you Sir.
My heart and love to your family.
