Steuben - Peter Jung Weil, a well-loved sculptor and Steuben community member, quietly passed away at his home in Steuben, Maine on May 30, 2019 at age 86. Peter will be missed by his beloved wife, Jane Weil, and a rich community of friends and family, including his older brother, Jesse Weil of Budapest, Hungary and Lexington KY, and his nieces, Janna Weil of Lancaster PA, and Alex Borns-Weil of Brookline MA. He was predeceased by his younger brother, Martin Weil of Los Angeles.

Family and friends will remember Peter for his dedication to his wife Jane, and to friends and community, his broad knowledge and wide-ranging interests, his wry wit and wordplay, and his playful art in metal, stone and wood. As he said recently, "I would like people to look at my work and be amused. Many of my sculptures are as much like toys as I could make them."

A Celebration of Life will be held on June 23rd at 3:00pm at the Henry D. Moore Library and Community Center. Memorial gifts may be made to the Petit Manan Ambulance Service in Steuben, Maine.

It was my good fortune to cross paths with Peter and Jane in the late 70s. I had found my way to the Downeast community as a young teacher and needed a place to live - Peter had made a delightful space over his workshop - I loved living there so much- the wide barn board paneling and beautiful sunlight. It was a great privilege to meet Peter and Jane- his art was sadly out of reach for a young person on a budget, but was greatly admired and appreciated. I also loved their gracious home and garden, delighting in the herons in the marsh just outside. I was able to visit Peter and Jane a few summers ago and was introduced to the SISS project. What a legacy to the Maine community! I’m so glad ...I stopped by that day. I only get to Steuben on a rare vacation excursion, but will remember Peter’s quiet kindness and gentle spirit always. Prayers of comfort to Jane and family. Peter has a special place in my heart.Read more
