Peter Webb Obituary
Stetson, Maine - Peter Alan Webb, 88, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2026, surrounded by his family at Eastern Maine Medical Center. He was born in Houlton, Maine on February 17, 1938, to Raymond and Mary Webb.
He was the oldest of four children. Grammie and Papa Bither, along with his aunts and uncles, helped Peter develop his exceptional work ethic that would define his life. At a young age he delivered newspapers and worked on Papa Bither's farm in Linneus. Peter graduated from Houlton High School, Ricker College, and the University of Maine. He dedicated his life to education, leadership and the advancement of officiating, serving as a teacher and principal for more than 35 years.
Officiating basketball and educating officials were Peter's life long passions. He officiated over 2000 high school and college games and served as assistant Maine basketball commissioner before becoming commissioner, a role held for more than 25 years. He was a 65 year member of IAABO (International Association of Approved Basketball Officials) serving as its president from 2001 to 2002. Blending his love of education and basketball, Peter became a certified rules interpreter and trainer of officials, creating and conducting clinics nationally and internationally. He was revered as one of the foremost rules interpreters and historians in the United States. Conversations with Peter often became journeys through decades of cherished traditions, memorable moments, and the evolution of Maine Basketball. In recognition of his immeasurable contribution to the game, Peter was inducted into several halls of fame including the IAABO Hall of Fame, National Federation of High Schools HOF, Maine Sports HOF, Maine Legends HOF, Maine Basketball HOF and the New England Basketball HOF.
Peter's passions extended beyond basketball. He loved old country music, baseball, wildlife, his pets, life on the lake and his State of Maine. As a promoter of country music, he brought Hank Williams Jr. and others to the County. Peter played baseball at Ricker College and semi-professional ball for the Houlton Collegians. He co-founded Caribou Little League and continued to serve the game as an umpire until the age of 80. Long drives looking for wildlife and driving the boat on Pleasant Lake with Marie filled his later days. If you happened to call and ask what he was doing when he was driving the boat he would always reply, "I'm just pretending to be rich."
Peter was a member of the Masons, Shriners, and Pioneer Lodge No.72. He faithfully attended the Messiah Baptist Church and always made known how deeply he loved his Lord. After an aneurysm in 2019 he spent time at Westgate Center for Rehabilitation in Bangor and Sanfield Rehab and Living Center in Hartland. He and Marie appreciated deeply the care and love shown by the staff and they enjoyed his wit and his smile.
Peter is survived by his devoted wife of 27 years, Marie (Messer), who cared for him at home for several years; his children, Peter A. Webb Jr. (Melissa) of Orlando, Florida, and daughter, Blair; Kyle Webb of Dedham, Maine; Elizabeth Webb Prudente (Scot) of Bangor, Maine, and daughters, Erica and Emily; Michael Webb (Doreen) of Lucerne, ME, and daughters, Tara, Kayla and Ellie. He also leaves behind his sister, Jane Weston (Charlie); Donna King, mother of eldest children; Viola Kemp, mother of stepdaughter, Stephanie McDonald and her children, Brianna and Andrew; and Lori Perley and her daughters, Sarah and Emily; great-grandchildren, Marshall, Lydia, Shea, Landon, Joelle, Parker, Reagan, Vivian and Brooks; Marie's siblings, Malerie West (Dave), Maureen El-Hajj (Steve), Meg Philippon (Pat), Mike Messer, Mark Messer (Beth) and Martin Messer (Meredith); several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and dear friends, Ray McClure, David Mansfield, and TJ Halliday.
