Peggy Ann Nelson Obituary

Cushing, Maine - Peggy Nelson, 77, of Cushing, Maine, passed away on September 23, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Rockland to Armas and Viola Mahonen, she married Buzzy Nelson in 1964 and raised three children in Camden.

Peggy worked for many years as an in-home healthcare provider, known for her spirit, resourcefulness, and unfiltered honesty. A champion of frugality, Peggy found value in everyday items. She had a deep love for animals, especially cats, often putting their needs before her own. She was known for her instant coffee and butterscotch pudding cups at family gatherings, and she proudly gave practical gifts or money to her children and grandchildren, which she had earned through hard work and odd jobs.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Leeann Ames; and brothers, Armas Jr. and Jimmy Mahonen. She is survived by her sons, Travis and James Nelson, of Searsmont, and their families. Peggy leaves behind her sister, Gloria Beck; and her sister-in-law, Linda Mahonen. Her memory lives on through her nieces, Sheila, Jennifer, Ailie, and Siiri; her nephews, Eddie and Jay; and her six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Peggy will be laid to rest at Pleasant View Cemetery in Cushing. Donations in her memory may be made to Pope Memorial Humane Society, honoring her lifelong compassion for animals.
