Oakfield - Paul F. Sherman, Jr., 86, died March 14, 2019 at Houlton Regional Hospital surrounded by the love, support and prayers of his family. He was born on September 11, 1932, in Oakfield, Maine, the son of Paul and Geneva (Shorey) Sherman.
Paul, known as a hard worker, spent much of his young life working on farms. He graduated from Oakfield High School in 1950. After enlisting in the Army at age 17, he became a radio operator and was stationed in the Philippines during the Korean War. After his discharge, he worked briefly as a lineman for the telephone company and then as a Maine State Trooper for almost two years. He then spent the rest of his working life at Great Northern Paper Company, first as a lab technician and then later as a supervisor. He finally retired in 1987 after almost 30 years.
Paul was a private person who shunned the spotlight but had a big heart. He loved helping people but did not want praise for doing so. He selflessly cared for his mom and stepdad and his in-laws for years. After he retired, he often shuttled family and friends to doctors' appointments and treatments in Bangor and Presque Isle without asking anything in return.
He loved to be outside. He enjoyed growing and eating his home-grown tomatoes, corn and cucumbers. He relished mowing the lawn, shoveling and scooping snow, and caring for the family camp.
Most of all he was a family man. He liked to brag about the achievements of his children and grandchildren. He was the happiest when his sons and their families were around. He doted on his grandchildren, most recently delighting in his only great-grandchild Camdyn.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Doris (McKee) Sherman. He is also survived by his three sons: Paul Sherman III and his wife Shelley of Dyer Brook; Patric Sherman and his fiancé Venise Thompson of Oakland; and Sterling Sherman of Waterford. He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Dane, Taylor, Kieran and Kimberly Sherman; Nicole and her husband Chris Giroux; Alyssa and her husband Matt Stuart and their daughter Camdyn; Lydia and her husband Blake Philbrick and son Nathan; and Gabrielle and Ricky Thompson. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Mary Crandall of Oakfield and Janet Kokaly of Vermont. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews including Ross and Clair Crandall, Norma Webb, Becky Prosser, Sarah Suitter, Cindy Braun, Cheryl Colby, Rhoda Shore, Melissa Everett, and Michelle Cootware Perkins. He will be missed by longtime friends Dean Fitzgerald, Charlie Osborne, Jim Burton and Rod Swallow.
Paul was predeceased by his parents and by his siblings: Darrell Crandall Sr, William Crandall, Virginia (Dare) Limbacher, Jean Dorris and Goldie Parker. He was also predeceased by special neighbors Joe and Marge Swallow.
Visiting hours will be Friday, March 22nd from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bowers Funeral Home in Houlton, Maine. The funeral service will also be at Bowers on Saturday, March 23rd, at 11:00 a.m. To share stories and leave condolences please visit

I worked with Paul for 20+ years in the lab at Great Northern. Paul was one of the finest people I ever knew. He is the salt of the earth. He was a great colleague and even a better boss. He will be sorely missed. My prayers and thoughts go to his family and wife.

Doris, I am saddened with you and your family. I can only imagine how much Paul meant to you, your children, their spouses and the grandchildren. He has left a beautiful legacy even by the quiet life he lived and his love will be with them forever. Know you are in my prayers and have my love.
