Westbrook and Roque Bluffs - Muriel Carolyn (Clemons) Watts (12/15/1924) passed peacefully on April 10th, 2019 with her very special nephew Danny Hatt by her side.
The daughter of David P. Clemons and Elodi E. (Bagley) Clemons, Muriel was a born educator. Her varied teaching career encompassed everything from a one-room schoolhouse in Marshfield, Maine to a highly decorated and well respected career as a college professor at the University of Maine at Machias where she retired titled Associate Professor Emerita of Education.
Muriel's teachings, her work with the PHI TAU PHI sorority and the countless extra curricular activities she was involved in wherever she was employed helped to positively shape many young lives. It was difficult to go anywhere with Muriel without someone recognizing her and thanking her for her efforts.
Muriel devoted much of her career to helping shape the Maine educational process. Her influences at the town, county and state levels are felt to this day.
Muriel loved children, boating, summers at Indian Lake, lobster feeds at "The Promised Land," and bluegrassing with her husband Philip Watts.
Muriel is survived by her son, David, her daughter-in-law, Kate; her sister, Della Foster; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to convey a special thanks to nephew, Danny Hatt and niece, Elaine Foster for their personal and professional help while Muriel lived in Portland.
We would also like to thank everyone at Avita of Stroudwater. The facility and staff were and are exceptional.
A private service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, ME. To view Muriel's memorial page, or to share an online condolence, please visit
Donations in Muriel's name may be made to: The Ark Animal Shelter, 60 Barber Lane, Cherryfield, ME 04622. Muriel's "comfort kitty" Jazmine was adopted there.
