Union - Muriel I. Heath, aged 97, passed away March 31, 2017, after a one-week stay at Quarry Hill in Camden. Up until then, Muriel remained in her own home, which was very important to her. She was very thankful for the many friends and family who made this possible. Muriel was born in Union, Maine, on November 30, 1919, the daughter of Earl and Marie Butler.
She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Union High School in 1937. She lived in town her whole life, and was awarded the Boston cane on December 20, 2013 at the age of 94 for being the oldest resident in town. She worked at a local grocery store, where she met her future husband. She later served as Town Clerk, and as a bookkeeper for Butler, Maxcy & Heath until she retired. Muriel married Robert C. Heath on May 20, 1948. They were married for 47 years, until his death in 1995. They enjoyed antiquing together and were collectors of antique glass for many years. Muriel was an active member of the People's United Methodist Church in Union. She was involved in many community organizations such as Order of the Eastern Star, the Grange, and the Historical Society. She enjoyed being a member of both the D.A.R. and the Mayflower Society. Muriel enjoyed many different activities over the years, including gardening, rug hooking, arts and crafts, genealogy and reading. She was very interested in the history of Union and kept many binders with pictures and news articles. One of Muriel's favorite sayings was "Life is Good."
Muriel was predeceased by her husband, Robert; her brothers, Chester and Wendell Butler; and her sister, Marjorie Butler Rich Olsen. She is survived by her three children, Linda Snow and her husband, Brian, of Auburn, Sharon Hoffses and her husband, Russell, of Baltimore, MD, and Alan Heath and his wife, Genie, of Union; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
