Oakfield, Maine - Merwin H. Crandall, 93, born February 18, 1933, to Calvin H. Crandall and Erma I. Crandall (Chute), passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026, after a brief stay at Madigan Estates with his family by his side.

Merwin attended and graduated from Oakfield High School. After high school he went to work in the woods for a short time. At the age of 20 years old he enlisted in the Army. From January 12, 1954 to November 22, 1955, he served in Korea. He was a long time member of the Frank B. Holden American Legion Post 52. After serving in the Army he came home and went to work in the woods and enjoyed working with horses and yarding the pulp. After which he bought his own bulldozer and cut the right of way for the interstate from Houlton to Lincoln. After owning his own equipment, he went to work for Smarts Equipment in Lincoln. A year later he moved back to Oakfield and went to work for John Deere in Houlton as a mechanic. He was well known around the area for working on skidders and farm tractors.

Dad was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Shirley Crandall (McKee). He was also predeceased by his sisters, Jauanita Hallet and Alice Cullinan; and brother, Alston Crandall. He is survived by five children, Debbie (Eugene) Schillinger, Anita Stafford, Glenda Crandall, Jug (Candy) Crandall, Calvin (Jodi) Crandall. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Sandy Polchies.

Special thanks to Shannon Crandall, who dad thought of as one of the kids, for all you have done for both mom and dad over the last 5 1/2 years. Also thank you to the staff at Madigan Estates for the care they gave dad over his brief stay.

Services will be held Sunday, July 19, at Bowers Funeral Home in Houlton, Maine. Calling hours are from 1 to 2 p.m. with services directly after. Interment will be in Oakfield Cemetery with military honors. Online memories and condolences may be shared at bowersfuneral.com.
