Maureen E. Hickling Obituary

Cambridge, Maine - Maureen E. Hickling, 68, formerly of Bangor, died peacefully on January 17, 2025, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, after a period of failing health. She was born on December 12, 1956, the daughter of Woodrow and Evelyn (Gibson) Hickling.

She grew up in Ludlow, graduated from Houlton High School, and began her career with the military in 1977. The military was her life. She retired from the Army National Guard in 2008, after serving over 30 years, and then went to work again as a civilian in their family program. Maureen fiercely loved all animals, nurturing and rescuing them. She would feed the strays and also had volunteered at the Spirits Place in St. Albans. She had even rescued a skunk that was stuck in a glass jar! She enjoyed being outdoors, working in her gardens.

She is survived by her husband, Stephen Channell of Cambridge; daughter, Carrie Hickling and husband, Eddie, of Littleton; cousins, Carol Ivey and Lydia Daigle; special friends, Reginald Briggs, Elaine Webb, Paul and wife, Brenda Hemingway, and Dawna Burnette; and of course, her beloved National Guard family. She was predeceased by her parents.

A special thanks and gratitude given to Gosnell Memorial Hospice House and to Portland Maine Medical Center for their wonderful care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a local animal shelter in Maureen's memory. A private committal will be held at the Ludlow Cemetery. Care has been provided by Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Pittsfield. To leave a message of kindness or to share a memory, please visit shoreynichols.com.
