Maryellen Sockabasin Obituary

Indian Island, Maine - It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Maryellen Sockabasin, who passed peacefully on May 3, 2025, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Bangor, Maine. Maryellen was born April 28, 1951, the ninth child of Ted and Lena Mitchell of the Penobscot Nation.

She was a graduate of John Bapst High School and Washington County Community College. She married the love of her life, Patrick Sockabasin, and they shared 55 years together. They were blessed with three children, five bonus children, and twenty-seven grandchildren. Maryellen adored her family and loved to share animated stories about each of them. For most of her career, Maryellen worked for Indian Health Services, in the Nashville and Bangor offices. She was a highly valued employee and was loved by her co-workers, many of whom became life-long friends. When not working, Maryellen loved being at camp on Grand Lake, where she created decades of happy memories with her large family. She will be lovingly remembered for her contagious laughter and quick sense of humor, which often made others laugh until they cried.

Maryellen is survived by her husband, Patrick; sons, Scott and wife, Andrea, Ron and wife, Cyndi, Derrick, Henry and wife Millie, and Patrick Francis; her daughters, Julie Sockabasin and April Tomah; grandchildren, Nancy, Lacey, Maria, Ellie, Scottie, Kamila, Alexis, Kara, Carly, Samantha, Derrick Jr. and Dustin, Tashina, Pat Jr., Abby, Todd, Jenny, and Brittany; and great-grandchildren, Kimaya, Elliot, Madelynn, Aurora, Depoy, Gaige, Sydney, Chloe, Moses, Ashton, Hayden, and Taylor. She is also survived by her siblings, Dana, Eugene, Stephen and wife, Debi, Richard, Kevin, Carl and wife, Yvonne, Nancy, Marie, Elaine and husband, Mike, and Natalie Michele; a special sister in-law, Annabelle; dozens of nieces and nephews, and numerous special godchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Ted and Lena; her sister, Sandra; and brothers, Howard and Wayne.

Visitation will be at Birmingham Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. A celebration of life will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Ann's Church, Indian Island. A Christian burial will follow at Indian Township.
