Yonges Island, South Carolina - Mary Callender Dorchester passed away in her sleep at her home near Charleston, South Carolina, on December 8, 2025. She had moved to the Lowcountry in November 2022, finding great peace and joy in a small cottage overlooking a tidal waterway filled with bird life.
Mary was the beloved wife of the Rev. Charles Dorchester, whom she married on March 4, 1961. Together, they shared a loving marriage of more than sixty years, raising their family while serving United Methodist congregations in Connecticut and Maine, and later enjoying retirement in New England. They were passionate birdwatchers, devoted to "chasing birds" and participating in many Christmas bird counts and breeding bird censuses, helping to keep track of bird populations.
Mary was a devoted mother to her two sons, Byron (Nancy Winslow) of Connecticut, and Daniel (Wendy Allen) of South Carolina. She was the proud grandmother of Danielle and Rexford. Family was always at the center of Mary's life, and she found great joy in her roles as wife, mother, and grandmother.
Mary was born on June 23, 1936, to Stephen and Carolyn Callender. She enjoyed a full childhood with her two brothers, Clark and John Callender. Later Mary attended the University of Connecticut, graduating and starting her career as a home economics teacher.
While raising her children, she devoted herself to family life and to the church, serving faithfully as a minister's wife and as a church secretary. One of the most ambitious projects of the church is its food cupboards; Mary enjoyed helping organize and participated in food distribution. Later in her working career, she was employed by the University of Maine at Orono, where she continued to be valued for her dedication and warm spirit.
Throughout her life, Mary was known for her kindness, hospitality, and quiet strength. She created welcoming homes wherever the family lived and supported countless parishioners, friends, and neighbors through her compassion and gentle presence.
In her later years, Mary found special happiness living near the water in South Carolina, with her son, Daniel and daughter-in-law, Wendy. She enjoyed watching the changing light, the occasional alligator, and the many birds and wildlife that gathered in the trees that lined the estuary. It was there, in this peaceful setting, that she spent her final days surrounded by many of those she loved.
