SEARSPORT - SEARSPORT - On Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, Marion (Philbrook) Alden, 93, died surrounded by her loving family at Waldo County General Hospital. Marion was born March 3, 1915, at home in Greene, the daughter of Frank and Margaret Philbrook. In 1935 Marion graduated from Leavitt Institute, Turner. She completed her teaching degree at Farmington Normal School and later received her Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Maine. She began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse and continued as an educator and coach for 28 years. In 1941 she married Russell Alden of Turner. They lived in Buckfield, Belfast, Dexter and Ellsworth before settling in Stockton Springs for 40 years, until Russ's death in 1997. Throughout her life, Marion was an extremely active and beloved member of the Searsport community, where she taught for the last 10 years of her career. She was a member of Eastern Star, Lioness International, Searsport Congregational Church and its Women's Fellowship, and Delta Kappa Gamma Society, which honors outstanding teachers. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her two brothers, Frank "Ike" and Robert Philbrook, both of Greene. Mrs. Alden is survived by her three daughters and their families, Margaret "Peggy" Stout and her husband, Paul "Marty," of Searsport and Finksburg, Md., Martha Ellis and her husband, David, of Manchester and Mary I. Alden of Searsport. Additionally, her beloved grandchildren survive her, Jeff Stout of Finksburg, Md., Zachary Ellis and his fiancee, Carolyn Litty, of Portland, Maggie Ellis and her partner, Ben Sidelinger, of Olympia, Wash., and Ame Willett and her husband, David, of Ellsworth; and great-grandsons, Caleb and Brenden Willett were great joys in her life. She will also be dearly missed by the family dog, Jilly. Friends are invited to call 3-5 or 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Young Funeral Home, Searsport. Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, at First Congregational Church, Searsport. Interment will be at Green Valley Cemetery, Greene, in the spring.
