Fort Kent - Marie Maude Marin, loving sister, caregiver, and role model to many, passed away peacefully in Fort Kent on September 10, 2019 at the age of 102. She was born January 16, 1917 in St. Agatha, the daughter of Joseph and Denise (Dube) Marin.
The last of her siblings to pass, she was predeceased by her sisters Irene Michaud, Simone Barwikowski, Laurette Ayotte, Albertine Marin, Leonie Lagasse, and her brother Fred Marin. She is survived by her eleven nieces: Terry (T.O.) Ouellette, Patricia Dow, Rachel Marquis, Simone Kramer, Tina McCready, Carmen Bedard, Germaine McLellan, Terry Lawler, Denise Gundersen, Denise Muszynski, Cheryl Remeika, and fourteen nephews: Paul Lagasse, Jean Lagasse, Jean Paul Michaud, Joel Michaud, Paul Marin, Alfred (Tat) Marin, Roland Ayotte, Richard Ayotte, Adrian Ayotte, Raymond Ayotte, Conrad Ayotte, Robert Barwikowski, Gary Barwikowski and Ronnie Lehman. She was predeceased by two nephews: Gerald Ayotte and Richard (Mitch) Michaud. She will also be remembered by special friends who took wonderful care of her when she lived at Montfort Heights in St. Agatha for many years: Sr. Jackie Ayotte, Sr. Joan Ayotte, Sr. Aurelie Michaud and Marilyn Beaupre. Her many great- and great-great nephews and nieces will forever remember her with love.
Maude graduated from St. Agatha High School in 1934 and from Madawaska Training School, now known as the University of Maine at Fort Kent, two years later. She then started teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in St. Agathe, but like so many young people from the St. John Valley, she moved to Connecticut to help in the war effort. However, it wasn't long before the needs of her family called her back to her beloved St. Agathe. She returned to take care of her aging parents, and she also taught for several years at Memorial School.
Maude later spent many years taking care of Father Romeo Doiron, then her brother Fred, then her sister Leonie. Her nephew Paul Marin once wrote about her: "Upon meeting Maude Marin you know you have come face to face with kindness. She lived her life so others could benefit and bask in her gracious and selfless giving spirit. Maude has willingly placed her needs second to everyone else. That must be why she stands first today in the hearts and minds of people who know her."
Learning how to use the internet in her 90s was just one of her many accomplishments. In 2014, Maude received the Most Senior Citizen Award from the Ste. Agathe Historical Society. At her 100th birthday party, celebrated at Montfort Heights in 2017, the St. Agatha Town Council declared her birthday, January 16, as Maude Marin Day. In 2018, she was awarded the Gold Cane Award by the University of Maine at Fort Kent Alumni Association.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Crosswinds for the loving care they gave their aunt in her last few months. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday September 21 at 10 AM at St. Agatha Catholic Church. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no calling hours. Those who wish may donate in Maude's memory to the Ste. Agathe Historical Society (PO Box 237, St. Agatha, ME 04772), the Long Lake Public Library (284 Main St., St, Agatha, ME 04772), or to a charity of their choice. Condolences may be sent to

"Well done, good and faithful servant." -Matt25:23. I am privileged to have known Ms. Maude and to have enjoyed an exciting card game of Charlemagne with her a few years ago. As she lived in peace, may she now rest in peace.
My sincere condolences to the family.

I was honored to have her sister, Albertine, as my main teacher, when I was in the sixth grade. If Marie was anything like Albertine, and judging from the tribute, she was, she was a kind and honorable woman. Please accept my sincere condolences. This world has lost someone special.
