Mattawamkeag, Maine - The family of Maria Shedd of Mattawamkeag is saddened to announce her passing on August 30, 2025, at the age of 100. Maria was born in Genova, Italy, on May 30, 1925, the daughter of Giovanni and Annette Lerma.

Maria and her late husband, Walter, met in Genova, Italy, in 1945, during World War II. They got married in Livorno, Italy, on April 30, 1946. Walter was given the choice by the American Government to bring home a souvenir from Italy, so he chose to bring home Maria on September 23, 1946. Maria loved her husband and the new country that she had made her home, so much so, she became an American citizen in November 1954. After becoming a U.S. citizen, Maria established her place and became a wonderful cook and kept a spotless home for her two children, Judy Shedd of Lincoln and Robert Shedd of Auburn, MA.

She loved to have company and would make a meal for you while visiting her. She loved to drive and would drive herself to the local grocery store every week before her passing. She loved to hunt and fish, and it was well known in the town that she would hunt on her own property every year and get a deer, tag it, dress it and drag it all by herself until she was 90. From the age 91-97, she shot a deer every year and tagged it but was no longer able to dress it by herself.

Maria is survived by her two children, Judy Shedd and Robert Shedd; two grandchildren, Robert and Jonathan; two stepgrandchildren, Colby and Aaron; two great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Dominic; one great-great-grandchild, Rosabella; one sister-in-law, Emma Lambert; and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind special friends, Deane Ciarrocha, Donna Davis and Gerry Libby. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Walter; an infant daughter, Jane Erina, in 1947; four sisters, Lodorina, Anita, Lidia and Teresa of Italy; and a very special sister-in-law, Shirley Budge.

Friends may call on Friday, September 12, 2025, from 12-1 p.m. at Bowers Funeral Home, 7 Lee Rd., Lincoln, ME. A celebration of life will be conducted at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with interment to immediately follow at Mattawamkeag Cemetery.
