Belfast - BELFAST - Lydia Smith died Dec. 4, 2012, at Waldo County Hospital. She was born Aug. 29, 1915, in Melrose, Mass., to Arthur and Lottie Barnes.
She was a graduate of Melrose High School and Lasell Junior College. Lydia taught art in several elementary schools in Worcester County, and was involved throughout her life in various community organizations. She retired with her late husband, Eliot, to Islesboro in 1974, where she continued her charitable work, particularly with the Islesboro Sewing Circle. She had resided at Penobscot Shores, Belfast, since 1999.
Lydia is survived by her two sons, Scott Smith of Islesboro and Mark Smith of Eureka, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Amanda Smith of Malden, Mass., and Ethan Smith of Portland, Ore.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at Penobscot Shores. A committal service will be held at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Mass., at a later date.
