Lucy H. Ledien Obituary

Belfast, Maine - Lucy (Herrick) Mailloux Ledien, 99, of Belfast and formerly of Blue Hill, passed away peacefully with her two sons by her side on Dec. 12, 2024. She was born on Halloween 1925 to Sadie (Billings) Herrick and A. B. Herrick of Blue Hill, as a special treat, the second of twin girls. With only one girl's name chosen, the couple named her Lucy Abbie, for their mothers.

Growing up in Blue Hill, Lucy graduated from George Stevens Academy, where years later she served as a trustee. She went on to college at Gotham Teachers' College, now known as the University of Southern Maine. There, she met Don Mailloux, who she married and together they had four sons.

The couple taught and coached at several Maine schools, including Andover, Strong, Penobscot, Guilford and ended at Belfast Area High School where Lucy taught biology and Don, who was blind, chemistry. In 1971, they moved back to Lucy's homestead and went to work for the Maine Teachers' Association. Following Don's death in 1975, Lucy was called to Brooklin, where she controlled and taught an unruly class that had already driven out a couple of teachers, ending up as the principal there. She married Harold Leiden in 1980.

Lucy loved knitting, quilting, cooking and preserving vegetables from her garden, winning many ribbons at the Blue Hill Fair. She also enjoyed swimming at the Waldo County YMCA swimming pool with a group of friends and traveling in both the U.S. and abroad was also a favorite of Lucy's.

She also enjoyed being part of a group, from Baptist women's fellowships to retired teachers' associations, the VFW auxiliary and grange. She served as officers in many of those groups and volunteered providing rides to medical patients who needed them and as a hospital aid at the Blue Hill Hospital and Waldo County General Hospital after she moved to Belfast to be closer to family. She also held offices at the Blue Hill Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Belfast, where she was a member at the time of her death, and on the board of American Baptist Churches of Maine.

Lucy is survived by two sons, Bruce (Becky) Mailloux and Randolph (Toni) Mailloux; four grandchildren, Dr. Benjamin (Robyn), Daniel Mailloux, Jana (Nate) Howard, and Traci (Paul Meola) Mailloux; 10 great-grandchildren; stepson, Ben (Debbie) Leiden and their children and grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and many friends. She was predeceased by both her husbands; two sons, Michael and Malcolm; twin sister, Catherine Moody; brother, Malcom Herrick; and classmates and friends.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Belfast, 95 High St. Burial will be at the Blue Hill Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Belfast, 95 High St., or Habitat for Humanity of Waldo County, 92 Belmont Ave., Belfast.
