JONESBORO and WALDO - JONESBORO and WALDO - Linwood Ralph Whitney, 89, died Aug. 13, 2009, in Machias. He was born June 27, 1920, in North Anson, son of Ralph B. and Eunice (Moody) Whitney. He graduated from Jonesboro High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1947, as Aviation Machinist's mate, second class. He was employed in Quincy, Mass., as a supervisor for American Machine Foundry, making aircraft parts. While living in Waldo, he was a school janitor and enjoyed driving the school bus for years, prior to his retirement as highway foreman for the Department of Transportation. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and always looked forward to his annual trip to the "Whitney camp," Centerville, where he and his best friend, the late Ted Nickerson of Belfast, would join his brother, Dwight. Linwood, along with his wife, Rena, gave seven acres of land to the town of Waldo for the development of what is now known as the "Whitney Athletic Field." Linwood is survived by a daughter, Doris and Anthony Pestelli of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a son, David and Sandra Whitney of Waldo, and their mother, Estelle; a son-in-law, Ed McKay; seven grandchildren, Karen Belton and Peter McKay, Rachel and Mark Pestelli, Ryan, Vance and Adam Whitney; six great-grandchildren, Whitney Belton, Caleb, Gracie and Lily Pestelli, Jadin and Ambrose Whitney; his only sibling, a brother, Dwight C. Whitney Sr. and his wife, Dot Mae, of Jonesboro; a very special niece, Elaine W. Cale; and four nephews, Dwight Jr., Philip, Patrick and John Linwood Whitney. The Curtis family also survives him. He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Linelle McKay; a son, Gary Whitney; his first wife, Eleanor (and baby); and wife, Rena Curtis Whitney. At Linwood's request, there will be no services. He will be laid to rest at Forest Hill Cemetery, Jonesboro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jonesboro Grange No. 357 Building Fund, care of Sanford Kelley, treasurer, 927 Mason's Bay Road, Jonesport, ME 04649 or to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are in the care of Young Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 31 West Main St., Searsport.
