Linnie (Griffin) Cates Crane
Machias - Linnie G. Crane, 99, passed away Thursday October 10, 2019 at Atlantic Shores, a Harrington Health Care facility, with loving family at her side. Born August 20, 1920 in East Machias, the daughter of Verda (Hoyt) Griffin and Daniel M. Griffin. Linnie graduated from Washington Academy in 1937. She was employed by the Farm Bureau in Machias for 10 years and in 1949 at Washington State Normal School, now the University of Maine at Machias, first as a clerk to then Principal Lincoln Sennett and retiring as Bursar after 25 years of service. She was a lifetime member of the First Congregational Church of East Machias, a 50-year member of The Order of Eastern Star, and a 15-year volunteer with the Down East Community Hospital Auxiliary, serving as treasurer for 14 years and working in the coffee shop. Linnie served as Washington Academy necrologist until recently and in 2009 received the Distinguished Service Award from the Washington Academy Board of Trustees.
Linnie loved visits from family and friends, and being a grandmother who remained actively involved with all until the last days of life. Her friends are too numerous to mention and of all ages from current neighborhood children to adult children of friends of long-ago who predeceased her. The essence of Linnie was love and we are grateful for her life of caring and service.
She is survived by her nephew Leslie Haynes (who she raised as her own), and his wife Debra (Hall) Haynes, step daughter Joyce (Crane) Richardson and companion William Wadsworth, grandchildren Scott Richardson (Mary), Janet Richardson Lewis (Jeff), Shelby Richardson Leighton (Eric), Tracey Haynes Parker, and Gordon Haynes; and great grandchildren Andrew and Adam Richardson, Darien and Tucker Lewis, and Julia and Cooper Leighton. Linnie was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 19 years Edwin Cates (1965), J. Hartley Crane, husband of 45 years (2011), a brother Daniel, a sister Pauline G. Seeds, nephews Larry and Lee Haynes, and step son-in-law Thomas Richardson,.
A special Thank You to CHCS Hospice, in-home care givers, and for the loving care of the staff at Atlantic Shores. At Linnie's request a private committal service will be held at a later date. Those who wish may contribute in Linnie's memory to Washington Academy Annual Fund, P.O. Box 190, East Machias, ME 04630. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Homes, Machias.
