Stonington, Maine - Lindsay Newland Bowker, born June 7, 1946, in Bangor, Maine, died on May 15, 2026, after a life distinguished by public service, civic engagement and international advocacy. She was the daughter of Carol and Frederick Bowker.

After graduating from Deering High School in 1964, she traveled throughout Europe before earning her degree from The New School for Social Research in New York City. Inspired by the challenges and possibilities of the city Lindsay earned a master's in urban planning in 1975 at New York University and embarked on a public service career spanning three decades. A dedicated advocate for equitable housing and economic opportunity, Lindsay helped lead the efforts to combat redlining and expanded homeownership opportunities for working-class and middle-class families. Her friend, Kathryn Wylde of New York City said that, "Lindsay was part of the generation of young people who believed in the City and worked to revive it." Gov. Mario Cuomo appointed Lindsay to the New York State Banking Board where she served 10 years with CEOs of the world's largest banks. In addition, she was involved for more than 10 years with risk management for New York's sewer and water authority, one of the largest in the world.

Lindsay returned to Maine in 1999 where she continued her commitment to public service as founder and executive director of World Mine Tailings Failures. From 2015 until her death, she compiled and maintained the world's most comprehensive inventory of tailings dam failures, helping advance safety and risk mitigation for vulnerable communities worldwide.

The natural beauty, plentiful wildlife and caring friends that she made at her home on Crocket Cove, Stonington provided peace and solace. She enjoyed singing in local choirs and volunteered at Head Start.

Lindsay is survived by her sister, Cherrie Bowker Cianchette; brother-in-law, Rocky Cianchette; and many nieces and nephews.
