Indian Township, Maine - Leslie Robert Nicholas Sr., a beloved son, father, husband, and community leader, passed away on October 11, 2025, at the age of 61. Born in New London, Connecticut, on June 27, 1964, to Carl and Faye (Russell) Nicholas Sr., Leslie was a man defined by his courage, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his community. His warm spirit and encompassing love touched the lives of all those who were lucky enough to know him.

An alumnus of Lee Academy, class of 1982, Leslie dedicated his life to the service of his community, with a dynamic career that bore testament to his resilience, dexterity, and dedication. From his time as a police officer at the Indian Township and Pleasant Point Police Departments to his proud tenure as lieutenant governor at Indian Township, Leslie's life was a testament to his deep-seated belief in the power of service. Leslie earned his plumbing and heating degree from Washington County Vocational Technical Institute, working for several years with Pat Francis. Leslie also owned and operated Nicholas Logging and was a manager for Creative Apparel. Most recently, he worked for Wabanaki Public Health & Wellness.

Leslie's contributions to his community were boundless. Serving on the Tribal Council, USET board, Passamaquoddy Blueberry Co., and the Indian Township Housing Commission, he helped shape the landscape of his home. Known affectionately as the "Passamaquoddy Can Man," Leslie's love for children and the youth of Indian Township was evident in his tireless fundraising efforts. An avid outdoorsman, he found joy in the simplicity of nature, often hunting, fishing, and boating.

Leslie was predeceased by his mother, Faye Nicholas; three grandsons, Paxton and Hunter Nicholas, and Anthony Sockabasin; and a sister, Margaret "Maggie" Nicholas. Surviving are his father, Carl Nicholas Sr.; his wife, Maria (Sockabasin) Nicholas; his children, Arthur and companion, Leilani Lawless, Lisa, Leslie II and wife, Jewel, Naomi and companion, Isiah Roscoe, and Nick Nicholas, Lindsey Berube, and Walter, Diora, and Haven Sockabasin; 18 grandchildren; aunts and uncles, Robert Russell and wife, Filomena, and Grace Haskell and husband, Larry; siblings, Lisa Sockabasin, Dolores Acheson and husband, Gordon, Carla Gillespie and husband, Bill, Alex Nicholas and wife, Regina, Carl Nicholas Jr. and companion, Brenda, and Chief William Nicholas and wife, Lucy; mother-in-law, Sylvia Sockabasin and companion, Nancy Polches; father-in-law, Charles Polches; special cousins, Marie Harnois and husband, Stanley, Eva, Alice, Chuck, and Calvin Nicholas III; and numerous other family throughout Maine.

A visitation will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the Indian Township Community Center & Parish Hall on Peter Dana Point. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at St. Ann Church, Peter Dana Point. Burial will follow at the Tribal Cemetery.
