Houlton - Lavona Howe Varney, 90, went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 25, 2020, after a brief illness. She was born on July 20, 1929, in Island Falls, Maine, the 11th child of Forest E. and Mary (Byers) Howe and the wife of Clayton C. Varney.
She was a long-time member of the Military Street Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and cared for children in the nursery for many years. In her later years, attending Sunday Service and socializing with her church family was a highlight of her week.
Lavona enjoyed people and working. Her career included admissions and bookkeeping clerk at the Aroostook Hospital in Houlton and payroll and accounts payable clerk for SAD#29 from which she retired in 1997. She then volunteered at the front desk at Houlton Regional Hospital for fifteen years. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and cooking and giving her creations away. She had a special fondness for young people and was thrilled when they would visit her and play games.
She was predeceased by her husband Clayton; one son, Wayne C. Varney; nine siblings and one half-sister.
She is survived by her daughter, Beth and her husband Fred Ludwig of Houlton; sisters Phyllis Worthley of Houlton, Joan Drake of Orangevale, California; brother and sister-in-law, Hillis and Janet Varney of Houlton, brother-in-law Skip Walton of Brewer; many nieces and nephews; and a special family Reverend Randall Burns, Melanie, Mackenzie (Hallee), and Madeline (Ben).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Military Street Baptist Church, 307 Military Street, Houlton, Maine. Due to the current situation with COVID-19, there will be a livestream funeral service on Sunday, March 29, from Military Street Baptist Church at 3 pm. http://www.houltonmsbc.org.

What a beautiful soul. I am so grateful that I got to know this lady in our brief time together at MSBC. She was such a sweet ray of sunshine! One of my favorite memories was of the week before Thanksgiving this past year when she took the time to write out a recipe for me. Praying for your family during your time of loss. Until we meet again sweet sister!
