Lancy Carter Christie Bradshaw
Lancy was born on April 11, 1927, in Etna, Maine, the daughter of Crawford and Bertha (Wheeler) Carter Sr. She graduated from Carmel High School and enrolled in the University of Maine, Orono, graduating in 1948 with majors in Psychology and Education.
She and her husband, James H. Christie, Jr., raised their family in Newport.
During her years in Newport, Lancy worked in the family business, Christie's Camps, and was active in many organizations, including the Newport Women's Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Newport Parent-Teacher's Association and the Sebasticook Hospital Auxiliary. She began her teaching career at Corinna Junior High School in 1960, and then taught at Newport Elementary School from 1973 until 1988.
Lancy married her second husband, Peter J. Bradshaw of Pittsfield, in 1978. Lancy's dedication to public service continued during her years in Pittsfield. She was a member of the Historical Society, served on the SAD #53 Board of Directors, and as a Trustee for both Maine Central Institute and the Pittsfield Public Library. She was a founding member of the Friends of the Public Library and served for several years as the president of that group.
Lancy's tremendous spirit, compassion, kindness and sense of humor made her a friend to all who met her. During her long life in Central Maine, and in her travels around the world, Lancy made many friends that she cherished and cared about. She was above all else a great mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to her large family. She cared deeply for her family, for her friends, and for the communities in which she lived. She will be missed by all.
She is survived by four children, Maryjane Stafford and her husband, Bruce of Winslow, Ginger Sander and her husband, Nick, of New York, Katherine Susi and her husband, Ted, of Skowhegan, and James Carter Christie and his wife, Sheila, of Dover, NH; three stepchildren, Peter Bradshaw Jr., of Bangor, Jane Bradshaw of New York, and William Bradshaw and his wife, Jean, of Yarmouth; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Preston Carter and his wife, Dr. Elizabeth Carter, of Tacoma, Washington; as well as nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; her first husband, James Christie Jr; her second husband, Peter Bradshaw Sr.; and her brother and sister-in-law, Crawford and Jean Carter of Etna.
