Almaty, Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan - Kristopher D. White of Almaty, Kazakhstan, passed away on February 1, 2025, while visiting his parents, Robert C. And Lynn H. White in Englewood, FL. An associate professor of geography at the Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics, and Research (KIMEP University), he was born on February 21, 1969, in Berlin, VT, and spent his early boyhood years in Barre, VT, Houston, TX, and Prospect, ME.
An Eagle Scout, he graduated from Bucksport High School, ME (1987), The Tilton School, NH (1988), and Clark University (B.A. Geography, 1992), where he also competed on their basketball and track teams. He earned his M.A. in geography (1996) and Ph.D. in geography (2002) at The University of Connecticut. At Clark he earned second academic honors and was inducted into Gamma Theta Upsilon. While at the University of Connecticut, he was awarded a Pre-doctoral Fellowship and Geographic Information Systems (G.I.S.) Certification, and at Moscow State University he earned Russian Language Certification. Other faculty appointments included; Stephen F. Austin State University, TX; ExxonMobil Director of Quality Assurance and Accreditation (KIMEP); Visiting Scholar at the University of Kansas (KU) Department of Geography and Atmospheric Sciences, KU's Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies, and the Central Asian Studies Institute at the American University of Central Asia, in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
Friends and colleagues have recognized his adventurous spirit, kindness, sense of humor, and robust laughter ... "a true gentleman and friend," and from the Times of Central Asia, "A gentle giant who inspired a generation of Central Asian scholars ... his legacy lives on in the minds he inspired, the friendships he nurtured and the body of work he leaves behind, all of which will resonate for many years to come." - Donnacha Ó Beacháin. An author and/or co-author of more than 45 research articles and 50 professional presentations worldwide, his current research included the snow leopard and cultural landscape in Kazakhstan and a book project, Nature and Society in Central Asia's Aral Sea Basin. Kris' passion for geography and photography supported his research and travels across 34 international borders including a recent expedition to South Africa and Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls.
In addition to his parents, Kristopher is survived by his brother, Gregory R. White; his nephew, Gabriel R. White; nieces, Chiara M. White and Phoebe R. White; and their mother, Elizabeth Boland. He is also survived by aunts and uncles, Susan Palmer, Betty and Rod Vallee, and Douglas VanDyke; as well as cousins, Jeffrey Palmer (Robin), Peter Palmer (Sarah), Scott Palmer (Lynne), Skip Vallee (Denise), Amy Norris (Kevin), Lisa Driver (Jim), Tim Vallee (Lynn), Andrea Dukas (Tom), Sarah Dowdell (Tim), Jennifer Lucia (Ralph), Amy Hurley (Joe), David VanDyke (Iis) and their families.
A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church in St. Albans, VT, August 2 at 11 a.m. followed by lunch at Kill Kare State Park, St. Albans Bay, VT. Burial will be for family members at a later date at St. Albans Bay Cemetery. Arrangements provided by the Heald Funeral Home of St. Albans, VT, and the Englewood Community Funeral Home of Englewood, FL.
