South Addison - Kevin Andrew Shaw, 61, passed away at his home after a courageous and admirable two year fight against esophageal cancer, surrounded by his incredibly devoted and loving family on June 5, 2019. He was born in Machias on July 10, 1957, the son of Raymond and Lillian Shaw. Kevin grew up in Harrington where he attended Harrington Elementary School where he would walk across the field from his home to the school house. He was a 1976 graduate of Narraguagus High School. Kevin owned WK Construction and was a premier custom home builder. He poured his heart and soul into building some of the most beautiful homes that dot the Down East Maine coastline. Many of his clients have turned into lifelong friends in part due to Kevin's kind and caring personality.
Kevin met his companion, Cheri, in 2000 and together they built a joyful and content life. They loved each other's children and grandchildren just as their own. Some of their most cherished times were gatherings with their large family at their home for holidays and birthday dinners. They also enjoyed their summers on the beautiful Bar Island in South Addison. They built a camp together in 2010 and here they have spent many treasured times with their family and friends. Kevin was the master bar tender on the island and loved to serve his concoctions to all of those who visited.
Kevin loved being on the banks of the Machias River, specifically on Carrick Pitch Falls, where his grandfather purchased a parcel of land in 1940 and lovingly built "The Old Bucks Home". This camp stood for over 60 years and many memories were made here by 4 generations of Shaws and their many hunting buddies. In 2008, Kevin built a new camp on this site and now the 5th generation of Shaws and their friends have discovered the serenity of this very special spot.
Kevin was an avid hunter and loved the many hunts the family has been blessed to be on together at the Old Bucks Home, "Up North" and at a Game Ranch. Kevin loved reliving and telling the many hunting stories and has passed on this passion to his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his strong and faithful mother, Lillian Shaw of Harrington; the love of his life and the most strong and committed companion, Cheri Oliver of South Addison; his children and grandchildren whom he was so proud of and adored, Raymond Shaw III (Trey) and his wife Nicole and their children, Emma and Nate of Milbridge; Ryan Shaw and his wife Megan and their children, Porter, Presley, Emma, Eden and Ella of Cherryfield; Nicholas Shaw of Ellsworth; Kristi Dinsmore and her husband Kenneth and their sons, Brettin and Logan of Harrington; and Stephen Oliver and his wife Hilary and their daughter Laney of Addison; his siblings, brother Robert Shaw and his wife Tanya of Harrington, sister Nancy Sawyer and her husband Dan of Jonesport. He will be missed by his many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nephews and Niece. Kevin was predeceased by his father, Raymond and a brother, Larry.
Per Kevin's request, a casual Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at 3:00pm at the Seaworthy Event Center in Milbridge. There will be a private committal service at Forest Hill Cemetery in Harrington. There have been many fantastic health care providers that Kevin and his family have encountered in the last two years and are grateful for the expert and loving care that Kevin has received. They especially wish to thank Dr. Aziz Massaad, the incredibly compassionate nurses at the Down East Community Hospital Infusion clinic, the providers and staff at DECH, Milbridge Medical Center, Dr. Abby White at Brigham and Women's and Cancer Care of Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kevin's name to the Infusion Clinic at DECH Attn: Community Relations, 11 Hospital Drive Machias, ME 04654.
