Bangor - Kelly A. Cassum, 50, died peacefully on May 16th, 2019, at her home surrounded by her loved ones. Kelly passed after a long but fearless battle with cancer. She was born on July 23, 1968 in Bangor, Maine, the daughter of Reid H. Thurber and Margaret A. Thurber.
Kelly graduated from Bangor High School, class of 1986. After graduating high school, Kelly married her childhood sweetheart, Randy Cassum, at the age of 19. They would have celebrated their 31st anniversary this June 11. After high school she immediately went on to pursue her passion in the dental field by completing a program for dental assisting. She then pursued an Associate's Degree in dental hygiene, only to then further her education by earning her Bachelor's Degree in dental hygiene through the University of Maine at Augusta (Bangor campus). Her love for learning motivated her to pursue her Master's Degree in leadership at USM. She was in the process of completing it during her battle with cancer. Over the years, Kelly spent time working for many wonderful people and growing her skills as a hygienist. Kelly loved everyday she spent at work and was very fond of the connections she made with her patients and co-workers.
Kelly was predeceased by her brother, Gary Pelkey, and her beloved mother, Margaret. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are her three daughters; Mikaela Cross and her husband Jordan; Skylar Bechtel and her husband Colin; her youngest daughter Miah Cassum; her father Reid Thurber; her three brothers David, Rusty and Michael; many nieces and nephews and other loved family members. The family was supported in Kelly's caretaking by her best friend and guardian angel, Catherine Allard, throughout her battle with cancer.
Relatives and friends are invited to Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 for a viewing for Kelly Cassum from 5-8 p.m.
There will be a funeral service held on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at Calvary Chapel, 154 River Road, Orrington at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ken Graves. Kelly requested that those attending her funeral wear bright colors in her honor. Please, no black if possible.
There will be a burial following the service at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery on Ohio Street in Bangor.
The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in honor of Kelly's life at Calvary Chapel after the burial from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Those who wish to remember Kelly in a special way may make gifts in her name to UMA, University Advancement, 46 University Drive, Augusta, ME 04330. A scholarship will be established in Kelly's name at the University of Maine at Augusta for dental hygiene students. Please add in the memo line: in memory of Kelly Cassum. Having lost my wife to cancer in 2005, I have knowledge as to how tough it can be to see a beautiful woman suffering the ravages of this dreaded scourge. During my wife's four - year ordeal , I was made aware of the weakness of self, the power of God, and the kindness of others. May the power of God be your strength at this time, and may you also find comfort in the fact that the hearts of many, myself included, are with you at this time wherein you mourn the departure of a beautiful woman, of whom doubtless you are very proud.

She was the first smile I saw as I entered the empty UMA dental clinic. She scurried over and introduced herself, I dare say she was more excited then even i was.
While attending the UMA dental assisting program she become a mentor to me, not only in the feild but in life. We checked in time to time, even after graduation. She impacted my life in a big way, in a very short amount of time. I like to think she knows she was a par above most and those who were blessed to know her truly loved her. I wont ever forget her and i will continue to reflect on her guidance. Much love to all whos hearts are heavy.
