Kennebunk, Maine - Katherine Smith passed away peacefully early on January 15, 2026, in Kennebunk, Maine. Kathy was born on September 15, 1937, in Jersey City, New Jersey, to James Patrick Langan and Katherine Norton Langan.

Kathy grew up in Jersey City, attending Holy Family School and initially working as a legal secretary in New York City.

Kathy was predeceased by her husband, Donald; and is survived by her 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Brian (Tinamarie), Greg (Beth), and Jeff (Dorothy); and her 6 grandchildren, Kayla, Conor, Trey, Annie, Evan, and Isabel.

Kathy (and Don) raised their sons in Middletown, New Jersey, until relocating to Ellsworth, Maine in 1984. In Maine, she worked as a legal secretary for two law firms and ran a family-owned auto repair business with Don for sixteen years. After Don passed in 2001, Kathy ran the business for many years before stepping back from day-to-day management. In retirement, Kathy volunteered as a hospice care provider and as a greeter at a local hospital. She also volunteered for the yearly loon count on Green Lake, was a regular election official at her precinct, and she was an active member of her parish, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellsworth. Kathy was devoted to her family and was known to all as kind and caring. She loved her home on Green Lake where she welcomed family and friends with warmth, hospitality, and good cheer for boating, cookouts, and lobster feeds. She loved to garden and spend time outside at her "camp." She also enjoyed traveling across the country with Don showing their champion German Shepherds, which they bred and trained at their home on Green Lake. She will be greatly missed.

A celebration of life will take place sometime in the spring.
