Joyce Hovey Madigan
Following Jim's deployment, Joyce returned to the East Coast and worked on a highly classified war related project at the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University. After the war, Joyce and Jim returned to Houlton and began raising a family.
Later in life, Joyce was employed as a social worker for the Maine Department of Human Services for several years and is still fondly remembered by many of the children once under her care who were on occasion overnight guests at the Madigan home. She was also active as a Brownie Girl Scout leader; chairman of the Fancy Goods Booth, which raised funds for the construction of the new St. Mary's Church; a member of the original Great Books Club at the Cary Library; and a member of the local chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).
Joyce spent many childhood summers with her extended family at North Lake and following World War II at the log cabin Jim built for their family at East Grand Lake.
Joyce is survived by her children and their spouses: Jane Madigan (Gary Parker), Christopher Madigan (Cathy), and Barbara Moakler (Tom) as well as former sons-in-law, Clark Thompson and Dennis Wright. Her beloved grandchildren include: Matt Thompson (Sheri); Andy Wright (Robin Lincoln); Sam Wright (Katie); Ted Wright (Maggie Hamilton); and Brian Madigan; as well as great grandchildren: Max and Alex Thompson; Ellis and James Wright; Madigan and Ben Wright. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Albert W. Madigan, and her sisters-in-law: Ann Madigan, Mildred Madigan and Theresa Madigan.
Joyce was predeceased by her parents; her sisters, Eleanor McLaughlin and Lois Ward; and a grandson, Joey Wright. She was also predeceased by many cousins including two very special ones: Anna Hovey and Carol Hagan Howe. During her lifetime, she enjoyed the company of several dear friends and is survived by beloved nieces, nephews and extended family members.
In accordance with Joyce's wishes, there will be no formal memorial service, but it has been suggested that friends perform an act of kindness in her memory - perhaps inviting a friend to lunch and enjoying a good time together.
