Farmington and Corinth, Maine - John "Smokey" C. Palmer, age 70, passed peacefully May 6, 2025, at Franklin Memorial Hospital with his family by his side. He was born August 1, 1954, in Waltham, MA, the only son of John and Patricia Palmer. John graduated from Waltham High School and enlisted in the Marines at 17 years old during the Vietnam War. John was a very proud Marine.
"Smokey" was a long-time resident of Corinth, where he could be found every morning having coffee with the boys. He also was one of the founding members of the Leathernecks MC Maine Chapter, where he served as both chaplin and vice president.
John was predeceased by his parents, John and Patricia; daughter, Madison; grandson, Jon-Michael; sister, Paula; brother-in-law, John, who was kindly referred to as Chinky; and sister-in-law, Alisha. He is survived by his best friend, Tanya; their three sons, ret. MSgt James and Melissa Nickerson, Jon-Michael and Kylie, and Colin; his grandchildren, James Jr., Crystal, Ashton, Aubrey, Mathew and John; his sisters, Cheryl and Bob Gelinas, Tricia and Michael McGuire, Lorraine Hogland, Jean and Frank Owen, and Sue and John Corbin. John is also survived by his "brother," Mike Whepley and wife, Elaine; mother-in-law, Shirley Carney; and sister-in-law, Erika and Gerard. John is also survived by several nieces and nephews whom he cherished very much.
The Palmer family would like to thank the Sandy River Center in Farmington for the excellent care they provided John with for the past three years and the staff at Franklin Memorial Hospital especially Aubri, who went above and beyond in John's final days.
A celebration of John's life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Jax Fund Team, 378 Hotel Rd., Auburn, ME 04210.
