Somerville, Maine - John "Mac" McLeod, 77, of Somerville, Maine, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026, in his own home with his son at his side after a quick battle with an aggressive cancer. He was born on November 1, 1948, to Ralph and Joyce McLeod in Bangor, Maine.

John was a Vietnam Combat Veteran who served three tours in the Army from 1966 to 1970. John enjoyed many non-conventional professions that mostly revolved around his connection with the natural world. He was a trapper and guide who pioneered drift boat fly fishing in Maine and was an active member of Trout Unlimited who advocated for freeing Maine's waterways. He was also technically savvy and developed Greenville Maine's first dialup internet business, Moosehead Online, in the 1990s. John enjoyed his deep connection with nature through his hobbies such as gardening, foraging, and building his own off grid passive solar home. He had a deep respect for all living creatures and always gave thanks for the sustenance the natural world provided him and his family. John also cultivated a deep connection with all his animals and took to training service dogs in his later years. A private person, John did develop a deep connection with the people that he did let into his life, choosing to see the best in people and helping many along their own life journey by sharing his powerful story.

John's strength and passion for life will be carried forward by his daughter, Morrigan Knox McLeod; son, Jackson Trapper McLeod; and granddaughter, Ava Knox Doody McLeod. He is also survived by his niece, Sherry Murray; nephews, Chuck Murray and Eric Rollins; his handsome service dog, Sam; and everyone he has touched along his journey. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Joyce McLeod; sister, Nancy Murray; and nephew, Alan Murray.

John donated his body to science and requested a celebration of life that will be held on November 1, 2026.
