John McDonough Obituary

BANGOR - BANGOR - John L. "Bud" McDonough, 93, died Oct. 8, 2011, at the Maine Veterans Home, Bangor. He was born July 24, 1918, in Bangor, son of James E. McDonough and Josephine Welch McDonough. Bud, who was known to many as "Uncle Buddie," was a graduate of Bangor High School and The University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario, where he continued his studies at the University of Ottawa Medical School. Bud served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a master sergeant, and was stationed in Biloxi, Miss. Upon completing his Army service, Bud returned to Bangor where he lived and worked as a pharmacist at the Post Office Pharmacy for more than 35 years, and then at Rite Aid Pharmacies, Old Town and Bangor, until his retirement. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society. As a devoted trustee of John Bapst High School, he worked tirelessly and successfully to continue to keep the school open many years after it was scheduled to close. For years Bud was a member of the board of directors at St. Michael's Home. He was also a member of the board of commissioners of Bangor Housing Authority for 22 years. This organization, which operated under HUD and was governed by the Federal Housing Authority, provided shelter and housing for many needy families in the Bangor area. Lastly, Bud was a member of the board of directors of Bangor Federal Credit Union, where he served for 40 years and was chairman of the Finance Committee. In 2003 Bud was honored by Bishop Joseph Gerry of the Diocese of Portland, with a distinguished Medal for his lifelong service to the ideals of the church and to Catholic Charities. In his personal life, Bud had a very special place where he spent summers - Sandy Point Maine on the Penobscot Bay. Here at the generational family cottage, Bud gardened, took care of the cottage, swam in the icy cold bay - and challenged others to do the same, sailed with neighbors, kayaked and canoed, and his favorite activity: put on lobster feeds for his family, neighbors and friends. He was also known for "Uncle Buddie's homemade ice cream," especially his raspberry sorbet and banana ice cream, which he made using his father's handed-down secret recipe. He is survived by his sister, Phyllis M. McDonough of Bangor; his nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Donald of Bangor, Constance Gibbons of Rockport, Paul Gibbons of Camden and Suzanne Roberts and husband, Thomas Roberts, of Hampden, Mark McGovern of South Egremont, Mass., and wife, Lissa McGovern, and Juliana McGovern of Lawrence, Mass., and his great-nieces and great-nephews, Charles Donald of Brookline, Mass., Paula Adams and husband, David Adams, of Newport, R.I., Caitlin Sullivan and husband, Kyle Sullivan, of Hermon, Abbey O'Conner and husband, Matthew O'Conner, of Brunswick, William McGovern of South Egremont, Mass., and Maura McGovern of South Egremont, Mass. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Greenlawn Memorial Funeral Home, 300 State St., Bangor. A Mass in celebration of Bud's life will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at St. John's Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bud's name to John Bapst Memorial High School, 100 Broadway, Bangor, ME 04401.
