John Grava Gonya Obituary

Brewer, Maine - John Grava Gonya, 70, passed away unexpectedly on July 15, 2025. Born on June 14, 1955, in Millinocket, John was the cherished son of Oville S. and Eva (Grava) Gonya Jr.

He lived a life rich in excitement and surrounded by love and adventure, finding joy in riding his Harley, tending to his bean garden and mango trees, fishing and guiding on the Penobscot River, hunting, and spending quality time with his family and friends.

John graduated from Stearns High School and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from the University of Maine in 1978. He spent the majority of his professional life working for the United States Postal Service, where he took great pride in his work. He loved delivering mail and talking with his customers, especially the elderly who sometimes waited just to chat with him. John deeply valued the relationships he built with the people on his route, as well as the many colleagues with whom he formed lasting friendships.

As a Registered Master Maine Guide, John followed his lifelong love for the outdoors and founded Penobscot Guide Service after retiring from the postal service. He specialized in smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing throughout the Penobscot River and surrounding lakes. Guiding wasn't just a job to John, it was a calling. With his calm presence, deep knowledge of Maine's waterways, and love for sharing nature with others, John created unforgettable experiences for both seasoned anglers and first-timers. Ice fishing in the winter, open-water fishing in the summer, he did it all, and he loved every minute of it.

In earlier years, John enjoyed riding his Harley and exploring the open road, though shoulder issues eventually sidelined that passion. He also traveled to Ukraine with his friend, Paul Staples, a meaningful journey he often reflected on. In his later years, John enjoyed winters in Florida, fishing under the sun while avoiding Maine's coldest months. Still, he always remained proud of his roots, he was, at heart, a boy from Millinocket.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Oville and Eva (Grava) Gonya Jr.; his son, Bradley Gonya; sister, Beverly (Gonya) Manzo; and brother, Oville Gonya III.

He leaves behind his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Mills and grandson, Liam Michael Gonya, of Indiana; sister, Mary Kathryn Brennan (Bill Oliver) of Florida; brother, Scott Gonya and wife, Marsha, of Millinocket; and nieces and nephews, Anthoney Manzo, David Manzo, Carla Morrison, JB Brennan, Tara Brennan, Amy Cyr, Lisa Harvey, Mary Stelly, and Cortney Klemperer; many great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as too many good friends to list. John was deeply loved by all who knew him.

Countless memories of John will continue to bring smiles, laughter, and warm thoughts to all who knew him. Whether it was the friendly teasing, the inside jokes, or the way he could light up a room with a story, John had a unique gift for making people feel good just by being around him. Many of us fondly remember the slot machine he kept, how as children we'd win a handful of quarters only to hand them right back for "next time" as part of the ongoing fun. He had a playful spirit and was always up for a little mischief, like the time he traveled out of state to stock up on fireworks that definitely weren't legal at the time, but sure made that Fourth of July unforgettable. It's in these moments-filled with laughter, generosity, and a bit of harmless rebellion-that John's true character shone brightest. These cherished memories will live on in our hearts and conversations for years to come.

In accordance with John's wishes, he will be laid to rest at Millinocket Cemetery in Millinocket, Maine, at a date and time to be determined. To honor John's memory, the family invites you to celebrate his life by taking a ride on your favorite motorcycle, fishing at your favorite spot, cooking out with family and friends, or remembering him in true John fashion, by lighting up the night sky with fireworks left over from the 4th of July.
